Switzerland goalscorers Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were fined and warned but escaped bans over their goal celebrations during their politically-charged 2-1 World Cup win over Serbia, FIFA said on Monday.
The two players, who are ethnic Albanians and of Kosovar heritage, celebrated with a gesture which appeared to imitate the eagle displayed on Albania’s flag.
Serbia refuses to recognise the independence of its former province Kosovo, whose 1.8 million people are mostly ethnic Albanians, which broke away 10 years ago, and opposed Kosovo’s ultimately successful bid to join FIFA.
They were fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,000) each for “unsporting behaviour contrary to the principles of fair-play” and warned, while team captain Stephan Lichtsteiner, who joined in with the celebrations, was fined 5,000 Swiss francs and given a warning, FIFA said.
All three players are free to face Costa Rica in Group E on Wednesday when Switzerland need a draw to progress to the round of 16.
The Serbian FA was fined 54,000 Swiss francs and warned for a “display of discriminatory banners and messages” by fans, while its president Slavisa Kokeza and national team coach Mladen Krstajic were fined 5,000 Swiss francs each and warned for comments they made after the game.
Xhaka and Shaqiri’s behaviour divided opinions in Switzerland with some politicians defending them and others saying they felt their goals were scored by Kosovo rather than Switzerland.
FIFA and its European counterpart UEFA ensure that Serbia and Kosovo are kept apart when making draws for European competitions.
In another decision, the Argentine FA was fined 105,000 Swiss francs after its fans were involved in “fights, throwing objects and homophobic and insulting chants” following their 3-0 defeat by Croatia.
Members of the team also failed to attend a touchline interview immediately after the match, which infringed media and marketing regulations, FIFA said.

1)Spain-Morocco match Before Spanish last minute goal, Busquets had a clear foul not given, Ball went out of the play not given but when Referee disallowed the goal for off-side , VAR tuned it over. Why this selective application of rules? Pique should have been given Red card at the start only but not given. VAR was silent.
2) Both penalties of Portugal and iran were disputed and referee got it wrong even after seeing replay. His original decision without VAR was better. Iran had two genuine penalty shouts not given earlier if they gave it to Ronaldo for such a dive.
Morocco and Iran might have progressed to next round if it was not for VAR.
Even a Bad Referee is atleast consistent. Selective application of replays has made the game worse. It has increased playacting. Earlier decisions used to come only if Referee sees it but now because of VAR, playacting and appeals for TV screen has increased. Absolute VARce !!!

Most people do not even understand VAR. They think it is similar to hawk eye or other 3rd umpire decisions in cricket. They forget that in football there are more grey areas open to refs interpretation

Nigeria Football Fan Assiciation have announced in a statement that they are organizing a mass protest in front of their parliament complex at Abuja, their nation's capital.
The fans have alleged that their national team's German head coach Gernot Rohr deliberately benched their best striker to award an unfair advantage to the Messi-led Argentina team.
Spokesman for the fan group Ebube Oladuntoye said, "The coach has to answer for his decision, which was extremely incompetent at best, and reeks of possible corruption. We shall continue with our protests until we hear a reasonable explanation from Mr Rohr."
The fan group, which has several thousand members across the country, had a hundred members travel to Russia to watch the World Cup, who already held a protest in front of the Nigeria team hotel following the defeat.
"We demand that the should be sacked immediately," said ond protester. "No one in their mind would leave out Dudu Omagbemi from a game like this."
