@munna219777: Dude your prediction is so correct!!!

You predicted Sweden will do well (I never thought they will. Just thought that they were lucky against Italy, plus they have no "star" in their team who will lift them up in their crucial moments, but look at them they beat best team in the group in most crucial match with best possible margin in the group & now are through!!!)

Mexico again staring at their R16 curse . Like every world cup, they are getting ready to lose R16 round to a great team  (Bulgaria-94,Germany-98,USA-02,Argentina-06,Argentina-10,Netherlands-14, Brazil-18(?) ) by 2-1 margin :)

@Carbon_14 Yes I have seen Sweden and Denmark during qualification process. They have potential to reach atleast QF. Lets see.
The performance of Asian teams has been beyond my expectations. 4 wins & 3 Draws so far and Japan has a serious chance today.

Both England and Belgium will play to lose today in order to avoid meeting Brazil in Quarter Finals. :|

Women make up nearly half of FIFA World Cup 2018 viewers in India

Regional language feeds in Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu contributed to 46% of the overall viewership on TV.

Close to 100 million Indians have tuned in to watch the first 26 matches of the FIFA World Cup, with almost 45% of the viewers being from states where football has traditionally been popular, West Bengal, Kerala, the North-Eastern states, and Maharashtra, according to numbers from Sony Pictures Network, the official broadcaster of the matches in India and audience measurer Broadcast Audience Research Council or Barc.

Interestingly, almost half the viewers were women.

According to Sony, 99.3 million people watched the matches across its five channels, and 18 million on its streaming service SonyLIV. According to Barc, which provides viewership data in impressions and not people, the first 26 matches, played between June 14 and June 22 garnered 90.7 million impressions.

The numbers may pale in comparison to cricket — in April, the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in its first week witnessed a total viewership of 213.9 million impressions for the eight matches played between April 7 and 13 — it still reflects the growing popularity of football in India and the enduring appeal of the football World Cup, according to a sports management expert.

“The truth is FIFA World Cup will be watched every four years. It has its own draw. The nature of the event is such that it gets its own traction. It is more than just chasing [football] clubs through the EPL or La Liga. These numbers show without a doubt that football viewership in India is on the rise,” said Harish Krishnamachar, co-founder, Sportoid, a sports consultancy firm.

Regional language feeds in Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu contributed to 46% of the overall viewership on TV.

“Our strategy of engaging viewers and catering to their convenience with local language feeds has helped us expand the market and reach out to a wider fan base,” said Rajesh Kaul, president, (distribution and sports business), Sony Pictures Networks India.

According to the company, women accounted for 46% of viewers and rural audiences, 41%.

The Germany vs Mexico match telecast on 17 June ranked as the most watched match in the period of measurement, according to Barc with 7 million impressions. Germany lost the match to Mexico and subsequently didn’t make it to the knockout stage of the World Cup after losing to South Korea on Wednesday.

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/football/african-nations-put-up-worst-showing-in-fifa-world-cup-since-1982/story-tGUb3B47JWLeTDzVqGu3pK.html

African nations put up worst showing in FIFA World Cup since 1982

In 2018, with the current crop of African stars such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, matching the record from the FIFA World Cup in 1982 underlines what a disastrous tournament this has been for Africa.

Senegal’s elimination on fair play rules not only made World Cup history, it is also the first time since 1982 an African team failed to reach the tournament’s second round.

Thirty six years ago such a poor performance by African teams was seen as less shocking.

In 2018, with the current crop of African stars such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, matching the record from the Spanish World Cup underlines what a disastrous tournament this has been for Africa.

The failure of five nations to qualify from the group stage triggered instant retrospection.

Didier Drogba, who appeared at three World Cups with Ivory Coast, said African teams had taken a “big step back” in Russia.

“Africa is going to be successful one day but we need to think again how we approach these big competitions,” he told the BBC where he is working as a television pundit.

Drogba called for better structure and planning to help African teams at future competitions and urged them to emulate European sides.

In some ways it was even worse than 1982, when at least Cameroon drew with eventual champions Italy and Algeria were denied only by the infamous West Germany v Austria “Disgrace of Gijon” game.

In Russia, three African teams -- Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia -- were out before the third group games started, Nigeria suffered late heartbreak against Argentina and Senegal’s exit is ultimately set to become a World Cup quiz question for the ages.

    Without a whimper

Or to put it more brutally, Egypt went out without a whimper; Tunisia likewise; Morocco played well but could not score and Nigeria, like Senegal, choked when it mattered most.

In fifteen games, the African teams managed just three wins, one of those a dead rubber.

Senegal’s coach Aliou Cisse was gracious after his team’s 1-0 defeat by Colombia and offered some hope saying his side, which he called “Africa’s team” before the last match against Colombia, “can have a bright future”.

But it is clear that on the global stage, African football is at best, standing still.

Only three African teams have ever reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup -- a Roger Milla-inspired Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010, who were denied reaching the semi-finals by penalties and a Luis Suarez handball.

The failure is surprising as it comes at a time when African representation is growing at World Cups and when fans have waited patiently for one team from the continent to make their mark on football’s biggest stage.

And this tournament had begun with such high hopes.

Egypt’s Salah was the most talked about star of the game, but his injury in the Champions League final and it subsequent impact on his country’s chances, set in train weeks of unremitting bad news for African sides.

The only World Cup light on the horizon is that the number of African teams will increase from five to nine in 2026 as the tournament expands.
