East Bengal and JCT won their respective matches in the final phase of the U-19 Tournament for the I-league. East Bengal edge past Churchill Brothers in a 7 goal thriller which the home team won 4-3 while JCT had a rather easy passage as they trounced Mumbai FC 4-1.
Churchill Brothers took an early lead in the 3rd minute as Adwin Lucas evaded an offside trap and gave Churchill the lead, but East Bengal restored parity in the next minute itself when Nabin Hela slotted home after Churchill Brothers goalkeeper, Melroy Fernandes, fumbled with the ball.
A minute after the lemon break, Pankaj Moula's right footed grounder shot from outside the box found the back of the net, while four minutes later, Pankaj Moula's brilliance paved the way for the 3rd goal of East Bengal. Pankaj brilliantly dodged past three Churchill players including
goalkeeper and passed the ball to unmarked Tanmoy Kundu who tapped the ball inside empty goal.
Churchill Brothers made a great comeback and scored two goals in quick succession to level the scoreline. Marcus Fernandes and Franky Oliveira were the scorers. However, a brilliant goal from Abinash Rui Das at the fag end of the match gave East Bengal all points as his shot from almost 30 yards out bulged the net.
In the other match, a hattrick from Seiminlen Doungel helped JCT to get full 3 points which they won 4-1. Guriqbal Singh scored the other goal for JCT while Ashutosh Mehta scored the consolation goal for Mumbai FC.
In the last match of the group to be held on Saturday, East Bengal face JCT in a must win situation while a draw will be enough for the team from Punjab to lift the trophy.
Well done, braving a partisan local crowd and still grinding a 0-0 draw.
How partisan can empty galleries be? Did you see TV/ newspaper pix?
I spoke with several people who went to this match. 5000, attended EB-Churchill Bros, while 8000 attended the final match. Same was reported in Bengali paper Pratidin. You can also check with Upamanyu Roy, EBRP member, who went to these matches
That is very good. You can always count on EB fans. Even for a junior team, they would fill the stands. I got the wrong wrong impression by viewing the TV snippets where the backdrops appeared to be empty.

Off season was also a factor I think. People need football
