The 22nd edition of the world's greatest sporting event begins on 20 November, an unusual time in its history, also being known as Winter World Cup. This is the second time that the showpiece event is being held in Asia after 2002 Korea/Japan.
Well most of the world weren't totally happy with the world cup being held in Qatar because of the aftermath of FIFA corruption scandal, strict Sharia laws, no drinking of alcohols , lack of support to LGBTQ community 🏳️🌈, women's rights, around 6k migrant workers being dead over the course of time from being awarded to be host. Another exciting thing is this will be last world cup featuring 32 teams.
The event is also the most expensive world cup ever mainly because of the infrastructure to be built from the start. Also proving to be white elephant since Qatar doesn't require too many stadiums. Another use of the stadium will be for Asian cup in 2023 which was shifted from China. Good thing is that many of the structures will be dismantled after the need and later transported to other nations.
Host nation Qatar face Ecuador on the opening night with the finale to be played on 18th December. Qatar is current Asian Champions with their team having a significant immigrants from famous footballing powerhouses. Brazil and Argentina are in good form with the latter being winners of Copa America. This can be the final WC for Lionel Messi. Also another name we have to take alongside Messi is Cristiano Ronaldo who will be leading Portugal and shall be his final WC too. England are another favorites being the Euro runners up. Harry Kane is also chasing top goal scoring record for England. Their neighbours Wales qualified after 58 years and the players like Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey will be an inspiration for future generations. Defending champions France have world class players like Mbappe, Griezmann etc, but will badly miss Ngolo Kante. Former winners Spain are banking on young talents like Pedri, Ansu Fati etc with the likes of Senior players of previous squad being retired or overlooked.
Canada qualified for WC after 36 years by topping the qualifiers and have a great talents playing across European clubs. Huen Ming Son leads South Korea which is capable of causing some upsetting results. Belgium has been doing good for a while and will be exciting to see the neighbours Netherlands which also boasts of good players now. Luka Modric will lead previous edition runners up Croatia for a swansong. Denmark has been good since the Euros and will prove a dark horse of the tournament alongside Switzerland .
Senegal and Cameroon will lead African pride with Ghana looking for a revenge against Uruguay .
So exciting months ahead and usual we Indians will be rooting for our clubs (as ISL and I league will go on) and other nations but Apna Time Ayegaa.
