West Bengal Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Aroop Biswas on Wednesday said renovation at the Salt Lake stadium for the upcoming Under-17 World Cup in 2017 would be completed by September this year.

The iconic stadium which is in the running to host the final of the mega event is undergoing a major face lift.

"They have given us time till October 2016. But the work will be completed a month before the deadline. Work is in full flow now and it is going as per plan," Biswas told reporters here at an event where he was accompanied by junior sports minister and former India cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Biswas and Shukla were feliciated at the event organised by the Bengal Olympics Association. They were handed mementos, gifts and flower bouquets.

Asked as to where Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) would play their home games and if the East Bengal, Mohun Bagan derby will be shifted as the Salt Lake stadium will go under the supervision of FIFA from October, Biswas said: "We do not know as of now. Whatever FIFA will tell us, we will abide by that."

Since this is the year of Olympics, Biswas also stressed on the importance of highlighting sports like shooting, archery, swimming so that the state can have more international athletes in the next few years.

He also added that new running tracks will be laid at the Salt Lake stadium.

So Athletics track will be there at Salt Lake Stadium? That makes sense as in the past, it has been used for Athletics also like South Asian Games 1987.

You frankly dont want any of our teams to play in the world cup or stage a big event isnt it?  I wonder why you dont have patience despite supporting EB of all clubs.

Infrastructure getting better, Sure thats badly needed after your EB has done fuck all to create anything in terms of infrastructure.

It puts India on the map, creates further interest in local football, with scouts from attendance all over the world, a good tournament can get you invited for extended trials at European clubs, infrastructure will be improved, the people who are tasked with showcasing the event will learn about planning and management at the requisite level and finally, it is the biggest football event India would have held in our history.

A very narrow minded, rather nonsensical but not surprising view from @EastBengalPride

What a frigging utopian view! Well be a realist! This is a backdoor entry to an elite tournament for us, we could never qualify and probably wont do for sometime. This will help us in improving stadias and related ground infrastructure of course and that's welcome. But apart from that, if we gain anything in pure footballing terms I would be surprised but pleasantly so. I will be there in the stands when our boys play with the tricolour. The AFC championship would show us where we stand.

@DX East Bengal actually has more infrastructure than your club o will ever create. How about starting with a fucking office first!
