New Delhi: Armando Colaco, the interim national football coach, will find it difficult to convince the All India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee that he deserves an extension beyond his four months at the helm.
Colaco, who is understood to have pressed for a five-year term, is now almost certain to return to Dempo Sports Club, leaving the federation to choose between Sukhwinder Singh and Moroccan Karim Bencherifa as the stop-gap replacement till the AFC Challenge Cup in March next year. Colaco’s term ends on September 30.
The new coach will also have to manage the national team in the friendly matches against Malaysia, Zambia and South Africa and the Saff Cup to be held in Delhi in December.
Sukhwinder, who is now coaching the Indian Arrows, has trained India in the past with a good measure of success, while Bencherifa’s achievements at the club level in India makes him a strong candidate. Under Bencherifa, Goa’s Salgaocar Club won the I-League last season.
“The executive committee meets on Thursday. It will be a toss between Sukhwinder and Bencherifa,” a senior AIFF official told The Telegraph.
“We do not have problems with Colaco,” said the official, who did not wish to be named. “We were still willing to give him a two-year extension as he did a reasonably good job in the World Cup qualifiers and friendly matches. But since he is insisting on a five-year term, we may have to think otherwise,” he said.
armando has to do something <!-- s:handgestures-fingerscrossed: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/handgestures/fingerscrossed.gif" alt=":handgestures-fingerscrossed:" title="Fingers Crossed" /><!-- s:handgestures-fingerscrossed: -->
Armando is becoming greedy...asking for 5 year contract with these credentials and that too for an Indian coach is too much. I dont think he is really interested in continuing with the India job and thats why he put forth such condition
our ranking has really fallen under Armando..will these high profile nations like zambia and south africa even agree to play against us??? <!-- s:think: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eusa/think.gif" alt=":think:" title="Think" /><!-- s:think: --> <!-- s:think: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eusa/think.gif" alt=":think:" title="Think" /><!-- s:think: -->

AIFF wants quick fix solution. They refuse to give Armando the required time to take Indian football to greater heights. Maybe AIFF wants to take the team to the bottom of the FIFA rankings.

I believe he's more interested in Dempo SC.
