Pune FC have done reasonably well in a city where Indian Football is an unknown quantity. It is not easy to build fanbase in 4-5 years and we also have to remember that I-League is bull shit and far from being even 1% of what Pune youngsters watch on T.V.
If it took millions of $ for nations like Japan and USA to attract average 20,000 in their league then what were you expecting in India ? There is lot of work to be done, the reason why Pune FC will never shut down like Cochin FC is because they are aware of the football potential.
It is going to take time, let the standard of National Team improve to certain level(Already underway with AIFF-FIFA Academies),Infrastructure(Hosting U-17 WC),then automatically everything will fall in place especially finance.
Could not have said it any better myself. But Ash can you explain the Goa situation. I think we all understand the Pune situation but come on for a state with fantastic clubs they should attract some people. Also I don't buy this crap about the money coming from donations. They should be coming from the sponsors.
Goan clubs do have fans but problem is they are far-off the stadium, also the floodlights are a big issue once resolved we can expect 5000 per match(Min standard set by AFC).
BTW Churchill Bros manage to get fans out of nowhere, even in 2010 AFC Cup they bought 12,000 average/home game and highest of 12,000 which is a record for Indian club in AFC Cup till date.

Nice article man. I liked how your prime example is Prayag and Chirag. I think we all know that Siliguri United and Viva Kerala FC were way better names.
Good article, couldn’t have been more incisive. It seals the debate.
IMO naming clubs on sponsors’ names and adding sponsors’ names to the clubs’ names should be banned. This in the minimum requirement for football to find popular support in India. We all call Mohun Bagan as Mohun Bagan, not McDowell Mohun Bagan. Similarly Prayag United should be called as United SC only. How they find fans is their business; if they are smart, they will relocate themselves or ‘do the needful’. Well, after shifting to Siliguri, they may rename themselves as ‘Dooars United’ or even Kanchenjonga FC or Teesta FC or whatever, not necessarily ‘Siliguri United’!
What I mean is: not only city name, a club may name themselves after any local geographical entity for a wide audience. Bottom line is to tie yourself at the local level. But company name never never (sorry Kurkure United & Horlicks FC).
IS that a rhetorical question or what? ,my post in itself answers your question.Wasn't it implied from the post.
It just seems like you favor a league which has all its teams named after corporates and such. I hope you were sarcastic there but you have to see that only shit countries like Pakistan use sponsor named clubs (Pakistan Bank National Club)
i will support clubs next season if every clubs think like dodsal by changing their name to mumbai tigers to coonecr with fans....they can still put sponsors logo on kits ..

Let me just say this. Name any league in the world that is successful and has teams named after companies
