Kolkata, Jul 15 () Former Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan's is widely speculated to become the marquee player of Atletico de Kolkata for the third season of ISL but the team owners today remained tightlipped on the subject. "We have not yet decided on our marquee player. We will announce the name before the (August 28) deadline and he will be befitting," co-owner Sanjiv Goenka told reporters today. The inaugural edition champions who finished second last year had a terrible experience with their marquee player Helder Postiga in 2015 as the Portuguese forward picked up an injury in the very first match of the season and went on to miss the remainder. "You learn from mistakes. Each franchise makes a team with an objective to win.
Nobody wants to make a team to do badly or lose. We have had a selection process and the coach's choice will be final. Selection is a subjective issue," Goenka explained. The Golden Ball winner of the 2010 World Cup, Forlan, is second on the honours roll of most capped Uruguayan players with 112 appearances for La Celeste, scoring 36 goals. The 37 year-old last played for Uruguayan Primera Division side Club Atletico Penarol at his home town Montevideo and scored eight goals in 31 games. Forlan is best known for making 134 appearances between 2007-11 for ATK 's co-owners Atletico Madrid where he scored 74 goals.
Last time the deadline was 31 July and now its August 28 ?? Are the teams finding it hard to sign marquee players? By this time last year 6 of the teams had signed marquee players
I think, due to Euros the dates have been postponed. Its better to wait . The free transfers are better at the end of August. Better would have been September
By this point, 5 teams had announced their marquee players last year... 2 of them being "player-coaches". Elano was retained... meaning only 2 new "only marquee" players had been signed, Simao and Postiga.
Then again we dont have those "player managers" this year so far. So it has been an improvement. Besides, its better to wait till end August. The best of players wont come to India, and they will still wait for a better club in Europe till the deadline day in the better leagues.
It's better to have 10 players of the calibre of Sony norde, Johnson, ranti martins, Odafa, etc. than to have 1 Forlan in a team to improve the quality of football. Just getting big names may attract crowds and fan bases but apart from their experience they offer nothing to Indian football.
