In Judo, our National Champion Avtar Singh lost in First round to Popole Misenga who was competing for Refugee Olympic Team. Think of that, we are so bad in Sports that cannot even compete with Refugees or special teams.
The problem is that Nationals are not held regularly. A cartel is there at the top which will select same bunch of chokers and losers every olympics - Sidhu, Sandhu and company. Olympics is all about selecting people on form and medal hopefuls. If National Championships are not held regulalrly, there is little competition at the top. The cartel will select same influential people every time. No matter how much money you spend in their training, if there is no genuine competition for places at the top, this thing will repeat again. Merit in selection is not there- just HYPE of Qualification. There is a concept of scientific training that people improve their performance to be in peak during actual Olympic event. In the case of Indians, all the peak is for qualification and hype only. Think of that. Our woman shooters who get Arjuna Awards, Officer Jobs in central Government, sarkaari flat in Delhi/Mumbai, months of training in Switzerland, pose with V sign in front of media are doing worse then woman shooters from Pakistan, Iran, Oman, Qatar. Even Bhutan Woman shooter did better then Ayonika Paul.
Having said this, all is not doom and gloom. There has been some noteworthy performances. Atanu das, Bombayla Devi, Deepa Karmakar have done us proud with their effort and they are still on course for medal. Abhinav Bindra gave awesome effort. Mens hockey team is giving best display since 2000 Olympics.
Bombayla Devi Laishram will face Alejandra Velencia of Mexico in Round of 16 Archery on 11th August 18:00 IST. Deepika Kumar will feature in 1/64 Round at 01:30 IST tonight against Kristine Esebua of Georgia.
