for Wall I don't know. At least I can't remember. In Bengali we say Deoal. For window there is an elevated term derived from Sanskrit in Hindi 'Gabakshya' in Bengali 'Gabakkho'. In common bengali it is Janla which is also used in Bhojpuri as Jangla for gate the word is fatak, kapat or sometimes simply dwar (same as door).
But I don’t understand this new found regional attitude of not Conversing in Hindi regressive. A nation should have atleast one language in which all the population can converse. Hindi being the most widely spoken language fits the bill. In my view this unites a nation. We already have lot to fight about...language based politics should not be one such thing.
Problem is we already have English as our link language We all are people who speak diffrent language out here but are comfortable in conversing each other in English
So their is no need for you to force Hindi on to someone who has hardly listened/spoken the language in his life.
English is being taught right from kindergarten and has already established language so their is really no need of Hindi.
Mother tongue and English is the global norm! Maximum knowledge in science, technology, engineering, medicine, history in the world is available in English.
It's your choice whether you want a blue collar job or a white collar one.
Great that we have solved the Global Warming problem and achieved World Peace while eradicating Poverty from all parts of the world with achieving 0% Global Population Growth that we can discuss trivial things like which Language is better or which religion gets you closest to a supposed God.
English being the link language is false argument. What %age of our population speak english? Now compare that to Hindi and you will have your answer. Pls. Don’t think i am against regional languages or culture. The diversity is what makes India different than others but being against the most widely spoken language reeks of regionalism and is IMO a threat to all of us as Indians.
There is more population in North then south that's why Hindi % is more, single state like UP has 30% of India's population. You cannot force Hindi on other on bases of population % . English should be the connection language between the state, most north,NE,West and south,East knows English while South, most states of NE struggle in Hindi, Hindi is a 3rd language in Western states and Eastern states, in Goa people speak regional language konkani but 80% of population use English as 2nd language, most goan know Hindi but are not fluint in it, they only use it to communicat with North Indian migrants who do most business in Goa.
@kartik91 Why should your mother tongue be offered undue advantage over other languages some of which are way older and accorded classical status? It's sheer hypocrisy and regional racism!
