An avid sports buff, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s love for soccer is no secret. Thanks to his passion for the game, Uttar Pradesh would soon have its first exclusive world-class football stadium in the state capital.
The stadium would be part of the upcoming sports city, comprising an international cricket stadium-cum-multi-utility sports complex, near Shaheed Path on Sultanpur Road. “We had planned a football field in the sports city initially. But the CM, who made a brief stopover at the project site on December 19 insisted that we should build a first-rate, full-fledged football stadium instead,” said an official requesting anonymity.
The project developer of the sports city, which would be spread over 137 acres, has submitted a blueprint of the proposed soccer stadium, to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 252 crore, to principle secretary, housing.“The cost of the stadium building alone would be Rs 188 crore. Another Rs 63 crore would be needed to build a covered underground parking facility,” said the official.
It was during his meeting with famous Brazilian soccer player Roberto Carlos in Agra last September that the CM had promised to take steps to popularise the sport (soccer) in the Hindi heartland, according to sources.
“To be built over 7.5 acre land, the stadium would have a three-storied stand with a capacity to seat 20,000. The size of the field, visitors and corporate boxes and all other facilities and amenities would be as per the standards prescribed by the International Football Association,” the official said. The basement of the building would have a covered parking facility for 750-cars.
