GFA approves phase-wise renovation of Nehru stadium(Goa)
PANAJI: The Goa Football Association has agreed to carry out a phase-wise renovation of the Nehru Stadium at Fatorda, with the Sports Authority of Goa promising to install floodlights by October.
GFA President Shrinivas Dempo, General Secretary Alberto Colaco and others met the Sports Minister Manohar Azgaonkar at the Secretariat, Porvorim to discuss issues related to the renovation of the stadium.
The meeting was also attended by SAG Executive Director V M Prabhudesai and technical consultants of SAG, who briefed the GFA top brass about the renovation plans.
Prabhudesai said that the installation of floodlights at the Nehru Stadium should be taken up on a priority basis and make them functional by October.
Dempo said that the government had given two alternatives to GFA, from which, the proposal to carry out a phase-wise renovation of the stadium was chosen, as it is more practical.
"The phase-wise renovation of the stadium, in which, the stadium would remain shut in parts, looked practical," Dempo said.
The other proposal necessitated a complete closure of the stadium for a couple of years, which would have adversely affect the football calendar, as Goa is considered as the hub of I-League matches.
The state professional football league is an annual affair and a season-opening event in the state. The Lusofonia Games (2013) and National Games (2014) are also to be staged in Goa.
I often read that this field is smaller, that field is larger than FIFA standard, so I thought to find out the actual sizes, which are given here:
FIFA Standard: 105.0 M x 68.0 M
Old Trafford: 106 M x 67.7 M
Santiago Bernabeau/ Nou Camp/ Allianz Arena: 105.3 M x 68.0 M
JLN N Delhi: 106.0 M x 68.0 M Ambedkar N Delhi: 101.0 M x 67.5 M
YBK Kolkata: 105.0 M x 68.0 M
Rabindra Sarobar Kolkata: 110.7 M x 74.6 M
Barasat: 110.0 M x 70.0 M
Howrah Corporation: 105.2 M x 73.4 M
MB/ EB/ MSC: 110.0 M x 70.0 M
Kanchenjonga Siliguri: 110.0 M x 75.0 M
Paljor Gangtok: 104.0 M x 84.5 M
Balewadi Pune: 104.5 M x 73.0 M
Gachchi Bowli Hyd: 111.3 M x 74.0 M
JLN Fatorda: 105.4 M x 70.0 M
I think all our stadiums are of standard size (except for Ambedkar), keeping allowance for error in measurement. The measurements are taken from Google Earth. The actual conditions of the turfs are altogether a different question. So are the stadium capacities.
These are turf measurements, i e, sideline to sideline & goal line to goal line. I had doubts over some of the fields above; measurements show otherwise. I still think MB/ EB/ MSC grounds are smaller. Can these be substantiated from other sources like official figures?
