Umm. @7negi that's easy to say. I agree Brandon coils have played up front but he seemed to have shown trust in him giving him the Pirlo role, but he wasn't able to execute it. It's true Brandon has been decent, but nothing spectacular in the hole.
We did try that easterday, farukh was played left. As an inside forward/ winger. @goalkeepar giving him 9 and accusing me, lol the article @thebeautifulgame pasted talks about Brandon's miss passes too. Don't be biased, making a lot of passes isn't enough when you can't dominated afghaAfghan
Because Brandon in his life never played as a CDM and you asking him to do at international level and he has skills to play that role but will take time to master that position also.
Even branon was decent but still he was best Indian player, completed most passes, took shots from midfield, created chance, retain possession.
Completely agree @7negi Ideally our midfield should contain one ball winning midfielder/defensive mid/enforcer who can act as a shield to back 4 as well as break up opposition attacks, one box to box midfielder who has excellent stamina and technical ability to be able to support both defence as well as attack while keeping the ball and distributing it to more offensive minded players, and one central attacking midfielder who acts as the fulcrum of all our attacks and can support Chettri as a false nine if the situation demands. To my mind in the current scenario keeping in mind injury to Amarjit, our ideal midfield shoukd be Reynier/Borges - Thapa- Sahal with brandon either coming on as a substitute for sahal later on or playing on right wing. Left wing should have either Farukh or Soosairaj or Ashique (in that order of preference). And Chettri as the lone striker. And those who are calling for his retirement must understand that despite being 35 years old he is still one of the most fittest and the only truly technical player in the side and our only true striker capable of scoring. Everyone has an off day. Even Messi fails to score for Argentina many times! Another reason Chettri was ineffective yesterday was because he was forced to come deep into midfield (just above the central midfield circle) to receive the ball and then build up attacks. Thus he was having to play dual roles of both a No. 10 as well as tgat of a striker, besides running a lot. All this takes a toll on your body if you are 35 years of age!
There's a huge difference in playing cdm and ball playing deep midfielders. Ball playing deep midlfielders don't have defensive duties like cdm, it's secondary to them. Pirlo/ makalele/toure all areavery different types of players in the same position But I agree he has never played it before, that's understandable.
If Pronoy had done his job, Brandon wouldn't have to drop that deep, for the entire 1st half he was the only player in our half with back 4 when they played from the back.
@Naujawan at least let us master a basic strategy first and then lets talk of more fancier ones. More importantly this is a balanced midfield which i am talking about, giving ewual protection to defence as well as similar emphasis on attack besides crowding the midfield and bossing it, not letting the opposition create moves through the midfield. Also we still lack in the final third so playing a more complex formation will be difficult. Lets start with the basic and play to our strength. Finally we have the requisite players to play this 4-2-3-1 system. We have decent wingers (pace wise at least if not technical skill wise), finally we have 2 extremely good ball playing, technically sound No. 10s in Sahal and Brandon, we also have good box to box mids like thapa, Reynier and amarjit and we have good ball winning midfielders like borges/amarjit/Reynier/Haldar. Our Centre Backs in jhingan, Adil, and Narendra are pretty decent. Only problem areas are full backs and striker (who after Chettri?).

But this is very basic, most teams counter it. It's the 4-4-2 of strategies.
