EVERYONE IS BLAMING raghunat for missing PC ...and want saneep singh back...do u guys even follow hockey regularly? the truth is that sandeep singh has became even worse in PC...in qualifying for olympic he was stellar....but the nation took part were below standard like canada, france austria etc,... sandeep never perform well against top teams....and the less said abt his defence the better.....his only gud thing is PC ...if you make him play against bangladesh france etc he will score 4-5 goals but against aussies ,england he look a diff. player altogether...he was brilliant in HIL though..but in WC its differnt level....so bringing sandeep ahead of raghunath is not good choice...raghunath also scores field goal.....and if he misses some doesnt make him bad player.....
and some of you are talking as if you are expected india to win world cup ...teams like belgium and england are ranked higher than india for a reason and they showed their worth....the truth is india played well above their potential and threatened to defeat yeah they loose matches bcoz of their stupidity but their are top class player in team like sardar singh....against aussise even if india take lead 2-0 expect match to end in 2-4 or 2-5 scoreline.....india set their target for top 8 finish....so just support them...their win is only realistic against malysia and spain......
I Agree with you Preetam regarding 8th place and support but still 8th is not a country like India should be aiming for.The thing is that Hockey isn't progressing.Still we are not attempting to build thru midfield. Moreover Stupid sense of ball possession is what is causing India.
I seriously don't know how these players are playing for India and who is teaching them at youth level because some of them lack basic understanding(what do when) keep alone executing it.Indian team in my opinion needs an Indian Coach(Extraordinary player).People like Ashok kumar, Mohd Shahid who used be world class players.Give them complete freedom for 2-3 and you will see the fortunes of Indian hockey big time.
People like Harinder Singh were bullshit players and as a result India has achieved nothing under them.
At current scenario india shud target 8th spot ...but the thing is that even though india lost both of their matches but they have close the gap and now matching the teams like england and belgium they are matching the par...earlier aus beat india 8-0 8-2 but this time margin wil be less...believe it or not but india has improved only result are nt showing up....fitness is gud..
@Ashlesh Cricket State associations are not state associations. They are regional associations as BCCI was founded in 1928 when states were not formed on language basis. So while Maharashtra has CCI (Brabourne Stadium), Mumbai Cricket Association (Wankhede), Maharashtra Cricket Association (Pune) and Vidarbha association (Nagpur). All these associations host international matches and earn money. Same thing Gujarat has Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Saurashtra(rajkot) and Baroda (Vadodara) cricket associations while Gujarat is one state. So revenue model is better.
Other associations are only one body for one state. Since 1990s, the trend in Hockey is not to host much international matches. earlier there used to be series with games in different cities. can anyone remember when was the last time Mumbai hosted international Hockey game or Bangalore or Hyderabad? Even if any tournament is there, to save money, all games are held in one stadium like National Stadium, Delhi. National Body Hockey India earns all the money.
If we spread tournaments in different cities, not only we will give a chance to different state associations to earn money, we will spread the game and more public will see it. The state associations will reinvest the money in their regional infrastructure.
Coaches trying to lift sagging morale of beleaguered Indian hockey team
India's hockey team on Tuesday went about working on the mistakes that led their narrow losses in the first two group league matches of the men's hockey World Cup. India conceded match-winners to Belgium and England in the dying stages of the preliminary league matches, leaving captain Sardar Singh disappointed not to have secured any point from two competitive games.
"We're put up a very competitive challenge against both Belgium and England, but we fumbled and gave away late goals to suffere defeats," Sardar said after the team's intensive training session today.
In the game against Belgium, India were at the receiving end for long periods and tried to pack their defence to defend the goal. In the encounter with England, the Indians had a clear advantage in the run of play.
However, they repeatedly gave away the ball after working hard to bring it to the rival circle. There was a time in the last stages of the match that India went out looking for the lead, only to concede the critical penalty corner at the other end and England got the match-winner on a penalty corner rebound shot from Simon Mantell.
Sardar said the defeats had certainly dejected the players, but there was a lot left in the tournament to play for. He said the Indian team will come out stronger after working on the mistakes they had committed in the earlier games.
India are clubbed with another Asian team Malaysia at the bottom of Group A standings with zero points from two outings, while defending champions Australia and Belgium have earned a maximum six points and England have four points for two matches.
Coach Terry Walsh was all praise for the way India played against England and said it was extremely disappointing to have lost such matches, but the boys need to lift themselves. "We're working on our mistakes. We've discussed them in the team meetings and have worked on them at the training sessions," said Walsh.
"The boys delivered a great game of hockey yesterday, although the end result was disappointing," said Walsh. "We're analyzing the mistakes made by us in the two matches here and will seek to plan our strategy accordingly," the Indian coach said.
India have two days to get over their dejection and work on strategy before their next match on Thursday against Spain, who have one point from two matches. Spain held England to a 1-1 draw, but were beaten 3-0 by Australia.
"We're determined to give a much better performance in the upcoming matches," said Walsh. He said the team was working on the goal-scoring strategies and also player rotation.
"Both Belgium and England are ranked much higher than us in world rankings, and yet we gave them a good competition," said Sardar, dejected like the rest of the team to have conceded goals in the final stages. Belgium, who won 3-2, got the match-winner against India with just 15 seconds on the board on the opening day, while England's 2-1 victory was sealed with a penalty corner conversion just 85 seconds before the hooter.
