Durand Cup 2021 set to be organised after a year’s gap
The oldest tournament in Asia will likely be played in Kolkata next month.
The 130th edition of the Durand Cup will take place next month, according to reports. The third oldest tournament in the world was not held last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pandemic ravaging the country only the Indian Super League, I-League and the I-League Qualifiers took place, under restrictions and in a bio-bubble.
The Durand Football Tournament Society confirmed the tournament will go ahead this year. The host city will most likely be Kolkata in West Bengal. The football-crazy city also played host to the 2019 edition.
Scheduling
The most likely date for the tournament is September as it falls in line with the upcoming season of the ISL and the I-League. The top flight of Indian football will start from November 2021 onwards, while the second tier will likely commence from December 2021. The I-League Qualifiers are set for September too, but the participating teams in the Durand Cup will not be a part of it.
Reigning Champions
Gokulam Kerala are the reigning champions of the tournament. The I-League outfit overcame Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium. They became the first club from Kerala to lift the title after 22 years.
Likely Participants
Local reports also suggest that several prestigious clubs are going to participate in the 130th edition of the Durand Cup. The previous edition saw teams like Gokulam Kerala, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, ATK reserves and more take part. This year, one can expect the top four teams from last season like Mumbai City FC, ATK Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United and FC Goa to be part of the tournament from the ISL.
As for the rest of the six available places in the 10-team tournament, SC East Bengal and Mohammedan SC will be the other two participants. The I-League champions, I-League runners-up and two teams from the army will fill the remaining four spots. The tentative timeline is September 2021, which is subject to change as more details emerge.
It will be interesting to see if the ISL teams send their reserves or senior players. The tournament will act as the perfect preparatory set of fixtures ahead of the 2021/22 season’s start.
Delhi State League & J&K started. Rajasthan league & CFL will start soon.
I know that Karnataka (Bengaluru), Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab conducted state leagues. Who else conducted? There should be 10 teams for Qualifiers with one state, one team rule.
but i think kerala fa nominated 2 teams : Kerala United and Royal Travels. Which team will get entry. I read somewhere only licensing criteria satisfied clubs will be allowed.
I want Kerala United to be included over Royal travels.
8 Teams: Rajasthan United FC, Rajasthan FC, Zinc FA, Jaipur Elite FC, Neerja Modi FA, Islands United FC, FC Brothers United, Royal FC Jaipur
Single round-robin format. All teams will play everyday from 22 Jul to 29 Jul, so thats 4 matches a day. All matches will be held in Poornima University, Jaipur.
