Bhaichung Bhutia has set his eyes on the Darjeeling hills
for adding more members to the United
Sikkim Football Club co-owned by him.
The former Indian soccer skipper was
here last night to attend a dinner
organised by the Rotary Club of
Kalimpong.
The player used the occasion to
highlight the soccer bond between the
hills and the Himalayan state.
Bhaichung said United Sikkim was a
club that the hill people could call their
own and sought their support for
scripting the team’s success story.
“We have started the club’s
membership campaign. There are
different categories of membership.We
also have memberships for students,”
he said. The four categories of membership are,
donor, platinum, gold and silver. A donor card will give five years’
membership at Rs 50,000, platinum
membership is for Rs 15,000 a year,
gold is Rs 10,000 per year, and silver is
Rs 5,000 per year.
All cardholders will get free entry to
United Sikkim’s home matches in the I-
League beginning on October 6.
The footballer said donor and platinum
cardholders would be entitled to free
snacks during matches and discounts at
selected retail outlets selling different
merchandise and at hotels.
They can
also send a child each to the club for free training on every Sunday. Capt. Prakash Pradhan, the director of
Rockvale Academy, was the first to take
the membership of the club.
He was
presented with a club jersey by
Bhaichung. Around 500 fans from Sikkim have
taken the membership forms and 70
have already applied. “Within a year of forming the club, we
were ranked among the top 10 teams
in the country. I am very proud of that.
Our aim is to win the I-League in the
next five years,” said Bhutia.
Come next Saturday, Gangtok will officially join those eight cities in India that are hosting the I-League 2012-13 season when home club United Sikkim takes on former champions Salgaocar SC in Paljor Stadium. The 20,000 seating capacity State stadium is expected to be packed with football lovers here rooting for their local club floated by Sikkim’s biggest football expert Bhaichung Bhutia. Preparations are underway by the club to give an unforgettable experience to its fan both on and off the pitch on October 6.
Sikkim Football Association (SFA) is also supporting United Sikkim to successfully conduct all its 13 I-League home matches. “We are seeking support from SFA. We have lot of things to do for the I-League matches which are of the highest standard in the country. Some of the clubs would be coming to Sikkim for the first time. We will be requiring expertise from different organizations to help us. SFA will be helping us”, said United Sikkim co-owner Bhaichung in a press conference on Saturday September 29.
Crediting Bhaichung for bringing top Indian clubs in Sikkim through the qualification of United Sikkim into I- League, SFA general secretary Menla Ethenpa said the I-League matches in Gangtok will inspire lot of budding footballers of Sikkim. “SFA has been conducting Governor’s Gold Cup for 33 years and we want to use our experience in organizing the I- League matches here. We will work shoulder to shoulder with United Sikkim”, said Ethenpa. Asked about the I-League preparations, Bhaichung said United Sikkim is preparing well and aims to do well in the tournament. “We want to win all our home matches and use the home advantage to the fullest.
Yes, our opponents are big clubs and have big names but United Sikkim is ready to take on them”, he said. A delegation from Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is reaching Gangtok on October 5 to inspect the infrastructural strength of Paljor Stadium and United Sikkim. It will also be attending the United Sikkim- Salgaocar match and then submit a report on the I-League matches are organized here. Tickets would be available for the club members and put on sale in the market two days before the game. The VIP gallery is priced at Rs. 400 per seat while a seat in the Northern and Southern stand (behind the goalposts) is Rs. 200. The hill side gallery ticket costs Rs. 100. We are also working to have tickets for students in school uniforms at Rs. 30 to Rs. 50, said Bhaichung. He pointed out that the VIP gallery tickets are very limited and would be available for spectators only after the demand of the club members are met.
We also have a special seat area for our Platinum and Gold members only and only these members are allowed to seat in that special area, said Bhaichung. Membership drive is going on and would end in the next few days.
Ten Action channel has the exclusive television coverage rights for all the I- League matches. The channel would be telecasting at least two matches here in Paljor Stadium live and it will be a huge platform for entire Sikkim, said Bhaichung. Asked how the government can leverage the I-League platform for development of football in Sikkim, Sports secretary Karma P Bhutia said that lot of football infrastructure in Sikkim has been developed and would continue to do so.
I am also putting up a
proposal before the State government for developing more Paljor Stadiums in district and subdivisional levels, he said. A dozen local players are already in United Sikkim and adding to those playing outside the State, around 30 families in Sikkim are dependent on football for livelihood.
