While creating the CFL thread, I was a bit intrigued by the name Measurers Club...I had not heard of this club before. I searched the Internet and came across 1) an interesting thread and 2) an article which briefly sketcht he history of this club

This is the unique story of Measurers Club in Kolkata, India added with some of the lesser-known stories from Indian Football related to their story
The Measurers Club was founded in 1902 by the Portuguese officers working in the Customs in the Kolkata port.
A brief background, Calcutta Football League was established in 1898 as one of the world's oldest football leagues and a 2nd division was soon added in 1904.
Coming back to the story, Measurers Club entered the 1914 CFL 2nd Division. 91 Highlanders won the league but were not promoted being a military club.
Measurers shared the 2nd position with "Mohun Bagan" who are now in AFC Champions League 2 as @IndSuperLeague winners.
Measurers played the promotion playoff against Mohun Bagan which ended in a draw. But Measurers won 2-1 in the replay at Caledonian Ground, earning promotion.
Although the withdrawal of General Athletic from 1st Div ensured the promotion of Indian football giant- Mohun Bagan too
Mohun Bagan (est. 1889) became the first native Indian formed club to enter Calcutta Football League as CFL was entirely composed of European clubs at that time.
Meanwhile Measurers Club from our story, remained in the top tier for the next 7 (1914-1921) years.
Unfortunately, in the 1921 Calcutta Football League, Measurers Club got relegated to the 2nd Div.
In the same season, Kolkata football also saw the emergence of another one of Indian football giants- East Bengal FC who entered CFL 2nd Div. who finished 3rd in their debut season.
Back to Measurers Club, their crest has a Latin proverb as their motto- "Facta- Non Verba" meaning "Deeds- Not Words".
Fast forward to the year 2024, Measurers Club is finally promoted back to the top-tier of Kolkata football- Calcutta Football League as one of the top 4 teams.
They returned to the to the top tier for the first time since 1921, 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝟭𝟬𝟯 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦! ·
This is the story of the incredible persistence and perseverance of Measurers Club in their quest to make a return to the highest division of Kolkata football- Calcutta Football League after over ten decades.
They truly lived up to their motto- "FACTA- NON VERBA".

Adjacent is the Measurers Club, there since 1902. I talk to its secretary, D.N. Biswas, a “retired measuring official”. The club was born out of the weights and measures department of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which would measure and weigh cargo shipped across the world from Kolkata Port and make freight calculations. With the river silting and the port falling on bad times, the department was wound up in 1988. The club manages to stitch together football and cricket teams. Evenings are mostly measured through pegs of subsidized liquor, the Measurers Club being one of the British-era clubs at the Maidan that got a bar licence. A large peg of Black Dog (Scotch) costs ₹ 150.
“Since the excise duty has douballed as such the prise of hard drinks has increased marginally”, reads a notice. Ironically, the Central Excise Club premises is opposite the Measurers. Does such excise duty-led “prise” escalation see drunken evening brawls?
Wow, good find, @thebeautifulgame! I was also intrigued by the name.
Interesting story, btw. Their rise was along with the rise of MB, and fall was along with the rise of EB. Would have been interesting if their second coming was with the rise of MDS.
