Calcutta Football League to Become First Competition in India to Use Goal Line Technology
The Calcutta Football League (CFL) is set to make history as the first football league in India to implement goal line technology, marking a significant milestone in Indian football.
With the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League yet to adopt any form of advanced refereeing technology, this decision from the Indian Football Association (IFA) to introduce this innovation represents a bold step forward for the sport in the country.
They have announced that the new technology, named Advanced Review Technology (ART), will be deployed in the CFL as a pilot project. ART is the result of a joint venture with Jadavpur University, whose professors and students have conducted four months of intensive research to develop this system.
The primary objective of ART is to accurately determine whether the ball has crossed the goal line, addressing one of football's most contentious and crucial moments.
IFA Secretary Anirban Dutta revealed the plans at a press conference held at the IFA office on Wednesday. He confirmed that the technology would be introduced in the Super Six stage of the CFL 2024, making this the first use of such technology on an Indian football field.
Dutta emphasised that ART is a low-cost solution, which could make it accessible for broader use in Indian football if the pilot proves successful.
The introduction of ART could revolutionise refereeing in India, providing a much-needed tool to ensure fair play. Dutta mentioned that if ART proves effective, it could be extended to address other critical aspects of the game, such as offside decisions and penalty calls in the future.
This collaboration also marks Jadavpur University's first venture into football-related technology, highlighting the growing collaboration between academia and sports in India.
The CFL's embrace of ART not only positions it as a trailblazer in Indian football but also sets the stage for potential technological advancements in the country's premier football competitions.
