Shillong Premier League: Langsning FC lift title defeating I-League side Lajong 1-0

Langsning FC were crowned champions of the Shillong Premier League Super Division on Friday after defeating Shillong Lajong 1-0 in the final held at the SSA Stadium.

Shillong Lajong played their I-League match on Thursday against East Bengal and all the first eleven players were rested for this match.

Langsning started the finals all guns blazing and had the majority of the possession in the match. They took the lead in the 16th minute of the game when Kitbok Pale scored from a free kick. They could have doubled the lead in the 39th minute, but the shot by a Langsning forward hit the woodwork. It wasn’t the best pitch to play a final and both teams struggled to play free flowing football.

The Lajong youngsters tried to get back into the game in the second half of the match. In the 50th minute, Donboklang’s shot which was on target went straight to the keeper, Frolicson Dkhar’s arms.

In the 58th minute, the referee spotted a foul about 25 yards out and gave Langsning the free kick but nothing much could come of it. Three minutes later, a Langsning player shot on target but Lajong keeper, Phurba Lachenpa stopped the shot.

In the 73rd minute, Lajong’s Sheen Sohktung almost levelled the scoreline but the forward’s header went over the crossbar.

In the end, the referee blew the final whistle and handed Langsning the win and the SPL title. The I-League second division side had beaten Lajong twice earlier in the season, twin 3-0 wins. While the first came in the league stage, the other came during the play-offs. Lajong had beaten Lansning 5-2 in a dead rubber with both sides resting their first-choice teams.

If your little son is keen on playing football, here is an opportunity to play the game competitively near home.

A league is starting in Salt Lake in early December where teams will play in two age groups — under 9 and under 11. Liga Prodigio will be organised in association with the Bidhannagar Municipal Sports Academy, under the All India Football Federation. The duration of the league is expected to be around four months with matches being held at the Bidhannagar Municipal Sports Complex in Central Park and at the AE Part 1 ground which has been renovated.

“Children today are engrossed in sedentary pastimes like video games or mobile phones even in the afternoon. If they can be drawn to physical sports and kept engaged for four months they will continue with the habit the rest of the year as well,” said organiser Aparup Chakraborty, an accredited AIFF match commissioner who is a resident of BL Block.

In the inaugural edition, eight teams will play in either of the two age groups. There will be 56 matches played in each category. The matches will be five-a-side for under-11 and six-a-side for under-9. “This will become an annual fixture. At this level, the coach acts as the referee.”

The inaugural league is already seeing encouraging response. The sports academy has booked four slots among the eight teams. A team from Burdwan has confirmed participation. Mohun Bagan will inform next week if they will send a team. “We have kept entry free this year,” said Chakraborty.

Similar baby leagues are being started in Kalyani and Tribeni as well. “While they are called baby leagues, here we chose the Spanish name Liga Prodigio instead of Bidhannagar Baby League to make it special for young fans of the Spanish league La Liga in which Lionel Messi plays,” said Chakraborty.

Of course, children cannot directly enrol to play in the league and will have to come through a team that registers to play. Bidhannagar Municipal Sports Academy takes in children from the age of six and coaches till the under-16 stage. “Currently we have about 200 students,” said a civic official. “Earlier we used to divide them into teams and play intra-academy matches. From this year, we have signed up for both the baby league and the under-15 and under-18 leagues of the AIFF. The slightly senior players come from as far as Barasat, Sodepur and even Burdwan but the little ones are from around Salt Lake.” The academy, founded in 1999, competes in Junior I-League and has produced professional club footballers, including Prosenjit Chakraborty of Mohammedan Sporting who has also represented India at the under-17 level. Coaching fees are Rs 200 per month at the junior level.

The children at the academy are thrilled to learn about the upcoming league. “My son is making sure he does his homework quickly so that he is not stopped from attending practice. He is refusing to stay home even if he has fever,” laughs Sanjay Giri, father of 10-year-old Soumo.

Sanchari Dey brings seven-year-old Samadrito from Dum Dum Cantonment thrice a week. “We had put him in a local coaching camp at the age of four. He is coming here since he was six. It’s a wonderful idea to start the baby league. If more talent comes up locally perhaps the big clubs will stop hiring foreign players.”

AIFF conduct Baby League in Leh & Ladakh

The League was organized in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir Football Association.

The ongoing season of the Hero I-League has brought the passion for football in Jammu and Kashmir to the fore and another positive development from the state has now come to light with All India Football Federation's (AIFF) recent grassroots programme, including a first-ever Baby League in Leh Ladakh garnering an overwhelming response.

In October this year, a State Development Workshop, as well as a Grassroots Leaders course, was held in Leh, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA).

The course aimed to build a foundation for the development of football in the high-altitude region. Along with these, Baby Leagues in four different age groups were also initiated and have seen a number of children participate and take an interest.

"This is the first time a Baby League of any kind has been organized in Ladakh," explained Tsering Tsomo, who is a qualified football coach and one of the main organizers of the AIFF initiative.

"We have four age groups in all, U7, U9, U11 and U13. While three leagues are conducted in Leh, the U11 one is conducted 200km away from the place," she said in a chat with www.the-aiff.com

“The teams come from all corners of the state and from a variety of backgrounds. There are plans in place to expand the programme, especially with the kind of response received,” she informed.

"We have been receiving requests from people in the Nubra Valley for Baby Leagues and courses, as there are a number of kids who want to engage in the sport. It is worth noting that the area is extremely remote and to get there, one has to pass through the world's highest motorable pass, the Khardung La," stated Tsomo.

Zameer A Thakur, President of the JKFA, pronounced that the initiative will draw more to the sport.

"This is the first time such a programme has been held in the region. It was extremely well received and we hope that in collaboration with the AIFF, we shall be able to implement more such plans and attract more and more people to the sport,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, Tsomo stressed that the organisers have overcome a lot of obstacles including the harsh weather conditions to make the programme a grand success.

“The administration has been really supportive and has helped us in every way possible. However, we initially faced difficulty in convincing parents and children to come forward and participate as people are not as aware of the sport. However, once we broke through the initial barrier, the response we got was amazing."...
