In Asia, many countries were still under Colonial Rule well upto start of 1970s. Only after Oil money and independence, Arab Countries started developing and after US troops left, Japan, Korea, China started playing Football seriously. India's position in Asian Football is in serious decline since 1970s. Also so many new countries have come up. Earlier there was one USSR. Now each of those 15 republics which were formed after USSR can defeat us in Football. There was one Yugoslavia. Now each of those 6 countries can defeat us. Add to that diaspora of countries living/born in other countries. European countries give passport to African born players and vice versa.
We need work at grassroots instead of ISL Circus.

BTW, final point about youth development and those who are dissapointed by it. Just remember, the FIFA-AIFF Academies are brand new. The Pune FC Academy is brand new. Bengaluru FC are only starting theirs this year. In Goa, the academies are still young and are only now starting to become organized but somewhat still (@gaffertape revealing that clubs like Churchill Brothers create a U19 side at the last minute for leagues and tournaments) and youth development being made important in new leagues in Mizoram.

Youth development has only started to take center stage recently and we should not be expecting great results automatically. Coaching still needs to improve. Facilities need to improve. The starting age to play needs to become better and overall organization needs to improve.

It was only a few years ago that clubs only had Academies like the Tata Football Academy, SESA Football Academy and the Chandigarh Football Academy to select players from and these academies are far from ideal. We also only had poorly ran tournaments like the BC Roy Trophy (U19) and Mir Iqbal Tournament (U16) to select players from.

Just be happy that the problems in youth development are starting to be realized and that things are starting to be done to improve results. There will be mistakes... massive ones but that does not mean the world is over, we will restart and hope for better results. That is how life works, football is no different.

Agreed on all your points.. Indian team was definitely good in the 70's and better than now in the 80's. But because of the poor and lack of youth development and short sightedness, India has lost similar quality players and has also lost its sheen..But having realized these facts, youth development has only started to roll and probably will take another 10 years to realize its affect. But better late than never

My only fear is, with the diaspora of the ISL, these developments do not take the back sit and only help is developing further. But going by what AIFF is doing, again we can go to the black days of no development. Just hope that doesn't happen..

Also the importance of youth leagues is as paramount as ever and if really we want to improve, we should start giving all the year around youth leagues of various age groups.

Personally I feel ISL will only hurt for a few years... I doubt it will still be around by 2020.
