We share the same language, religion, culture so we didn't riot as such but street fights have been aplenty. I have personally been involved in a couple of them.
The rivalry really started when MB blocked EB's promotion to top division because they wanted to be the only Indian club in there. They berated us for being from the other side of the river and having a different accent which they found funny and not classy enough. They were enamored with the English ways, semi slaves if you can call it. So we had to prove we were the dicks who remained at the top and they were the balls, who hanged below.
MB was the club of the Bengali elitists while EB fans were sons of the soil, the people's Club.
Inspired by the nostalgic rivalry between two football giants — Mohun Bagan and East Bengal — of Kolkata, the Bengali diaspora in the UK will organize a fan football tournament at London’s Slough Town Football Club on July 22. Christened IFA Shield UK — on the lines of IFA Shield Kolkata — the concept not only taps the Bengali love for football but also rekindles the eternal Bangal-Ghoti fight that the GenY (especially in the UK) is almost unaware of. The event will also include an ilish-chingri food festival. Only, IFA here stands for the Indian Fans Association of the UK.
Three East Bengal and three Mohun Bagan fan teams will play round robin to decide the finalists. But there is a twist to the tournament — matches will be played only between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan fan teams. An East Bengal fan team will never play another East Bengal team. The same goes for Mohun Bagan fan teams. The 20-minute games, split in two halves, will have a five-minute break.
“We are pushing the otherwise not very gym-going diaspora to the football grounds,” said Anirban Mukhopadhyay, key member of the London Sarad Utsav (LSU) that is organizing the event as part of its Bengal Heritage Project that took off last year to promote Bengal’s cultural heritage in England. The event has National Health Service, UK, as its partner. The teams have been named after football legends. The three Mohun Bagan sides have been named after Sailen Manna, Shivdas Bhaduri and Sudip Chatterjee and East Bengal teams after Christian Junior, Ahmed Khan and Krishanu Dey.
The gala event seems to have caught the diaspora’s imagination. Weekly practice sessions have started at Slough, Hounslow and Harrow. “The opportunity (of playing football wearing jerseys of their favourite clubs) has evoked much excitement,” said Londoner Samrat Chakraborty. Among those he’ll play against is 16-year-old Booklyn Don Mapfumo, who plays for Chelsea U17 as the main striker, and is now in the Mohun Bagan team. Each team will have a player from the EU.
“Each team has eight players, even as 14 names can be registered in each team. A team must have two children in the 13-16 age group. The teams can register maximum three non-Bengali or EU or British players, but can play only two at a time,” said researcher Abhishek Dutta, who will be going from Belgium to be part of the “football festival”.

হিমালয়ের পাদদেশে এক প্রত্যন্ত গ্ৰামে ঘাটি গেড়েছিলাম দুজনে .ছবির মতো সুন্দর একটা গ্ৰাম .সামনে বরফসাদা হিমালয় হাজারো রহস্য নিয়ে দাড়িয়ে আছে .মাথার উপরে নীল আকাশের সামিয়ানা ,ঠিক সামনেই বয়ে চলেছে একটা ছোট পাহাড়ী নদী .যার শব্দ শুনলে মনে হয় যেন কোন কিশোরী মেয়ের উচ্ছাস .আর নদীর ধারেই সবুজ কার্পেটে মোরা ভ্যালি . সবদেখে শুনে নরেন খুড়ো আর আমি তো ঠিক করেই নিয়েছি যে বাকি জীবনটা এখানেই কাটিয়ে দেব .ভালোই চলছিল ঐ অলসতায় ভরা অবসর জীবন

একদিন সকালে নরেন খুড়ো আর আমি নদীর ধারে দুজনে বসে আছি ,নরেন খুড়ো বিড়িটায় শেষ টান দিয়ে বলল "ভাইপো এখানেই থেকে যাই ,তুই এখানকার কোন মেয়ে বিয়ে করে নে .এরা কেউ জানে না তুই মাচা . বিয়েতে কোন অসুবিধা হবে না " .আমি কিছু বলতে যাব তার আগেই দেখি কাঞ্চা হাজির .কাঞ্চা হলো আমাদের লোকাল গাইড .বেটে খাটো কিন্তু সদাহাস্যময় এক পাহাড়ি যুবক .এই কয়েকদিনে ওর সাথে খুব ভালো বন্ধুত্ব হয়ে গেছে . কিন্তু ও দেখি রীতিমতো কাঁপছে ,চোখে মুখে মৃত্যুভয় .কাপতে কাপতেই বলল "সাবজি বহৎ গড়বড় হো গ্যায়া , গ্ৰামকে উপর ইয়েতি নে হামলা কর দিয়া ,ও বহৎ খতরনাক জীব আছে ,ইনসানোকো কাচ্চা চাবা যাতা হ্যায় " . সবশুনে আমি নরেন খুড়োর দিকে তাকালাম ,দেখি নরেন খুড়ো নেই ,নীচে তাকিয়ে দেখি খুড়ো ভয়ের চোটে অজ্ঞান হয়ে গেছে .

কথায় বলে যেথায় ভূতের ভয় সেখানেই সন্ধ্যা হয় .সেই রাতেই পেয়ে গেলাম ইয়েতির দর্শন .রাতে ভাত আর মাছের ঝোল খেয়ে সবে শুয়েছি .খুড়ো বলে উঠল "যাই বল ভাইপো এখানে গেঁড়ি গুগলি আর কুচো চিংড়ি খুব মিস করছি" .খুড়োর কথা শেষ হতেই হঠাত দেখি কেউ দরজা ভাঙার চেষ্টা করছে . দরজা ভেঙেই ফেলল শেষ পর্যন্ত .দেখি সামনে ইয়েতি .অন্ধকারে ভালো ভাবে বোঝা না গেলেও আবছা আলোয় বুঝতে পারলাম এ নিশ্চিত এক ইয়েতি .দুজনেই বুঝে গেলাম আজ আমাদের শেষ দিন .আমাদের দুজনকেই কাচা খাবে এবার .চেঁচাতে যাব ,হঠাৎই দেখি সেই ইয়েতিটা হাউ হাউ করে কাদতে লাগল ,আর পরিস্কার বাংলাতে বলল "ওরে চেচাস না ,আমি ইয়েতি নই ,আমি তোদের দেবাদা .আমাকে দেখে এখানে সবাই ইয়েতি ইয়েতি করে তাড়া করছে .গত পাচদিন কিছু খাই নি .কখনো গুহায় কখনো গাছের নীচে রাত কাটাচ্ছি ". আমি তখন আলো জ্বালিয়ে দিলাম ,দেখি সামনে আমাদের দেবাদা .আমি তাড়াতাড়ি জল খাইয়ে বললাম "ওদের আর দোষ কি বলো ? যা প্রকান্ড চেহারা করেছো .কতবার বলেছি একটু ডায়েটিং করো " .খুড়ো জিজ্ঞেস করল " তো হঠাৎ হিমালয়ে কেন ?" দেবাদা কাদতে কাদতে আধঘণ্টা ধরে যেটা বলল তার সারমর্ম হলো .হিমালয়ের কোন এক লোকাল কোম্পানি যারা জড়িবুটি দিয়ে তেল বানায় যৌনক্ষমতা বাড়ানোর জন্য .তারা নাকি মোহনবাগানের ইনভেষ্টার হতে চেয়েছে .তাদের সাথে দেখা করতে এসে এত কান্ড .
ওদিকে তখন অন্য আর এক কান্ড .দেখি গ্ৰাম শুদ্ধ লোক ছুটে আসছে ,সবার আগে আমাদের সেই কাঞ্চা .ও চেচাচ্ছে "এ দো বাঙ্গালীনে ইয়েতি কো লায়া . ইয়েতি ভি ইধার হ্যায় .তিনোকো মারো ". সে শুনেই নরেন খুড়ো বলল আরে পালা. দাদা বলব কি ? অহংকার করছি না .কিন্তু পালানোর ব্যাপারে আমাদের ধারে কাছে কেউ নেই .তিনজনে দৌড়তে শুরু করলাম .পিছনে গ্ৰামসুদ্ধ লোক .দৌড়তে দৌড়তে দেখি দেবাদা বলছে ,বাদিক টার্ন নে ,ওখানে একটা গুহা আছে .ওখানেই আমি লুকিয়ে ছিলাম এই পাচদিন .তিনজনে মিলে ঐ গুহায় ঢুকে গেলাম .নরেন খুড়ো একটা বিড়ি জ্বালিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল "তা ঐ কোম্পানি ইনভেষ্ট করতে রাজী হলো ?" .দেবাদা বলল "রাজী তো প্রায় হয়েই গিয়েছিল কিন্তু অঞ্জনদা পুরো কাঠি করে দিল ". তারপরে আর কি ? কোনরকমে গুহায় রাতটা কাটালাম .পরেরদিন সকালে লুকিয়ে লুকিয়ে নীচে নামলাম আর ট্রেন ধরে বাড়ি .ও হ্যা আর একটা কথা, ট্রেনের টিকিটটা দেবাদাই কেটেছিল .
Since this thread has been languishing for a long time, I decided to revive it, albeit with a twist.
Instead of bickering about which club is the best, I have decided to present and translate a poem by the renowned Bengali writer, Nabaneeta Dev Sen, who passed away recently. The poem brilliantly captures the intense rivalry between the Bangals (supporters of East Bengal) and the Ghotis (supporters of Mohun Bagan) which is a part of the football culture of Bengal, in the form of an imaginary conversation between Mithu, a fervid MB supporter and Kutu, an equally passionate EB supporter. I have to admit that my translation fails to do justice to the colourful Bangal and Ghoti dialects that lend an extra charm to the poem; many of the local idioms/phrases have no equivalent in English and I have tried to keep the essence as close to the Bengali version as possible. However, this is not an attempt to derogate any community/section of people but simply to present, in a hilarious vein, the quintessential football spirit of West Bengal.

So now the legacy clubs play in seperate league. The biggest indian derby is no more till the league merger in future. Else they will face off in local leagues.
