Tibetans get money from UN courtesy of their refugee status and its not a small amount. So, why would they accept citizenship?

@munna219777 they will count as foreigners when they will play ACL/AFC cup not the national league. in China Taiwanese, hong Kong and Macao players are considered local in there leagues so they don't take foreigner slots but they become foreigners if they play in ACL.

Minerva Punjab FC calls two Bhutanese footballers for trial

Two national football players, Jigme Tshering Dorji and Nima Wangdi left for Chandigarh, India yesterday after Minerva Punjab FC, one of the leading I-League clubs called the players for trial.

Both Jigme Tshering Dorji and Nima Wangdi play for Thimphu City.

I-League came up with the new rules of including six foreign players, of which at least two should be from AFC member nations.

“Minerva is planning to release Japanese player and could have a slot for one of them,” Hishey Tshering, Thimphu City’s Club manager said.

Minerva Punjab FC is the first Indian club to sign a Bhutanese footballer after it used one of its AFC member slots to sign Chencho Gyeltshen last year.

Hishey Tshering said that the opportunity granted to the two players is because of Chencho Gyeltshen’s good performance at the club.

Chencho Gyeltshen said that he recommended the club’s owner to give Bhutanese players a platform to prove their potential.

He said that the club called three players for trial. However, Tshering Dorji could not turn up for the trial because of injury.  “Bhutanese players lack professional platform.”

Jigme Tshering Dorji made his first appearance for the national squad at South Asian Football Federation Cup against Sri Lanka in 2011. The 22-year-old defender has made more than 17 international appearances. He scored his first international goal against Bangladesh in the second playoff round in Asian Cup 2019 in 2016.

Nima Wangdi is known in the domestic leagues for his skills and ability to displace the opponent with his pace from the flanks. He made his first international appearance against India in a friendly match and played against Bangladesh in both legs of Asian cup 2019 playoff round in 2016. The 19-year-old made more than seven international appearances.

Indian media has reported that the duo would undergo trial at the Minerva Punjab football club from today.

@goalkeepar As per Chinese law, residents of HongKong, Macau are considered Chinese Citizens. There is a special passport issued to permanent residents of Macau hongkong which says that they are citizens of China. China does not recognise Taiwan either and all their nationals are considered Chinese citizens as per citizenship laws.

Our case is different. We do not allow dual nationality and also do not consider Bhutan or Nepal citizens as Indian citizens.

It is not completely in the hands of AIFF. AIFF will consider them Indian if government of India consider them indian citizen like how China government has written citizen of PRC in Hong Kong passport.

@sam.  @atuljg. Your observation on Tibetans is correct. They follow their leader dalai lama orders. If they become indian citizen, UN money in dollars is stopped and their chance of immigrating to western countries Like Canada or Australia gets jeopardized. They all have applications for asylum filed thru UNHCR. They are unlucky because no country wants to damage their relations with China with granting refuge enmasse to them -so only a small trickle goes out every year. They were expecting one day their leader will negotiate a better deal for them. Let's hope Dalai Lama or his successor one day ask their followers to take up India citizenship. Most of them are born here.

Well, there is another option. India can do a Sikkim with Bhutan. Just send her army to Bhutan and take control of the country and declare it as India’s 30th State.
