The proposed makeover of the Ambedkar Stadium, Kochi into a grand football arena is all set for a take off on July 21.
The first phase of the renovation works, which includes laying of a synthetic football turf and installation of floodlights, is expected to be completed within six months. The Kerala Football Association (KFA) will be taking up these works as per the standards suggested by FIFA at a project cost of Rs.10 crore.
Alongside, the Greater Cochin Development Authority, which own the facility, will be renovating the galleries at a cost of Rs. 30 crore with financial assistance from the state sports department.
It envisages construction of the stadium in the north-south direction with galleries on all four sides and a total seating capacity of 10,000 people. The largest galleries will be on the eastern and western side. Facilities for accommodating the teams and supporting officials will be set up below the galleries.
Steps are also in place to rehabilitate the 32 vendors at the spot to a new shopping complex coming up at the north side of the stadium and also to open a 7-metre wide road to the location.
