It is astonishing that in a huge city like Kolkata, there is only ONE proper stadium for football. I am discounting MB/ EB/ MSC makeshift so-called stadiums. The hosting of matches at YBK will be tougher this year onwards because of W17 WC preparation, ISL and so on. during similar situations earlier, IFA used to look for matches in Howrah Corp Stadium, Barasat Municipal and even to Kalyani Municipal Stadiums.

I was wondering why they did not consider Rabindra Sarobar Stadium for the purpose. This stadium, though of small capacity (20,000) and not in prime condition, is well within the southern part of the city and well connected  with mass transport routes. Earlier AIFF wanted to get it on lease from the state government, but nothing materialized.

Can anybody throw light as to why this stadium is never under consideration?

barasat and kalyani stadium also good options. here for many years we used to listen promises from different sports ministers. nothing really progressing . other states somehow doing better than us.

barasat has all the facilities. astro turf ( fifa 2 star) , four flood light stands. the gallery, enclosures, dressing room need a revamp.
howrah stadium needs flood light. natural turf but in good condition. gallery need a revamp. capacity shold be increased.
    ravindra sarovar as u mentioned.
    kalyani need flood light.
actually we have facilities but they have to be revived. i will be more than happy if saltlake stadium is closed for 2 years for renovation then they have to increase facilities in at least two of the other stadiums. why vybk every time?

@footydip, Howrah, Barasat and Kalyani are fine. May be each of them need some improvement in some areas or the other. My specific query is: Why Rabindra Sarobar is NOT used even for CFL/ IFA Shield matches, leave alone I-League matches? Whereas I think they should strive to stage NT friendlies there.

Are there any legal/ ownership related issues here? or maybe infra issues like the galleries and dressing rooms falling apart?

Howrah may not be an option. Expansion is not possible. The stadium is in really congested area. There will be parking and evacuation issues. It has good turf for practice though

As per this wb govt leased rabindra sarobar stadium to ifa for 5 years( from 2009) .so the contract is ending by this year. Bunch of fools of ifa didn't utilise this tenure.
