It Won"t be that easy to make the next Round.Instead of top 2 Qualifying from each Group, they"ve changed the Format slightly.
In this Edition,Top Team from each group will qualify directly to the Quarter-Finals.However,2nd place teams from each group will have a one-off playoff match against a 3rd place team of other group and the winner of that match will qualify for the Quarter Finals.
India can finish First as well, but Worst case Scenario,if India finishes second, then Considering the Groups,India will face Newzeland /Spain,Ireland,Pakistan/Malaysia.
On paper,India is better than all of these teams but in a one-off match it will not be easy.
So,yes India should qualify for the Quarter-Finals relatively easily even in the new format.
How can Boxing federation select players with out trails for common wealth games. They have not selected Shiva thapa and some of promising boxers in the squad. Now we have only hope on 4 category for medals amitpanghal(49kg), manojkumar(69kg), vikaskrishnan(75kg), sumit sangwan(91kg)
Defending champion Bajrang Punia settled for a bronze in men’s 65kg freestyle as Indian grapplers bagged two medals on the penultimate day of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek on Saturday.
Vinod Kumar Omprakash won the other bronze medal in the men’s 70kg freestyle. The two medals took India’s tally to eight — gold and silver each with six bronze medals.
Lot of money is involved in Training, Foreign stints, Corporate sponsorships, so every procedure of selection of Boxers is myriad in controversies. If there will be trials, questions will be raised on judges. Having said that, Trials should have been conducted. Young upcoming Boxers will not get opportunity in Points System. Is this new approach some Corporate Push? They will put money only if they have guarantee that their nominee will qualify. Points system can guarantee that.
We have sent a Very Very Young squad to Azlan Shah.
Our squad has 5-6 players who were making their International Debut in this match.
4-5 players who have played just couple of International Tournaments and who are very very young at the International Level.(Gurjant,Varun,Amit,Dipsan etc)
Our Squad has just 4 players who played at the Olympics (Sardar,Uthappa, Ramandeep and Talwinder)all these four players are either coming back from injury lay-off or trying to cement a place in the team)
We have atleast 12-15 first choice players missing from this squad.
On the other hand, Argentina was full strength with 10-12 players from their Rio Gold Medal winning squad
Match Analysis:- Even with our young/inexperienced team we were the better team and we controlled the match.Yes,our youngsters were controlling the Match.
Couple of Defensive errors from us resulted in Penalty Corners for them and they clinically converted them and that was the difference. But,the youngsters will make these errors so nothing to worry about.
I am very impressed with the way our players played against the much fancied Team. So,all in all it was a very impressive performance by us. I know This was just one match and I would wait for the Tournament to analyse these players positives and negatives. But,trust me guys,if this match was anything to go by,I would say that,we have a VERY VERY BRIGHT Future in Hockey.
Two players who have really impressed me,based on just today's performance were:-
1)Sumit Kumar-International Debut today. Not that Sumit who has been playing for India. The guy whom I am talking about has Jersey no. 28.
2)SimranJeet Singh.Debut match.
I'll share a detailed Feedback about the players once the Tournament is over.
India vs Malaysia is always cracker of a match at Azlan Shah with a highly charged crowd. If our young players can handle that pressure, it will be a great experience. Ireland and England are tough teams too. Most countries rest their key players for Azlan Shah but India, Pakistan, Malaysia used to send full squads in the past.
