A Club is a human association, like a poetry club, a chess club, a political club, etc.
A Franchise is a brand, like Twix, Mars, Bud, etc.
A Club is related to a community. A Franchise can be moved anywhere,
accordingly to the desire of the shareholders of the moment.
A Club will last forever, a Franchise not.
Clubs do move though. We have MK Dons being the prime example. My Arsenal moved, abite from one part of London to the other but that is still moving. We have had clubs in India move as well. Plus franchises moving is not common, at least not as much as people think it is. Only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the St. Louis Rams (NFL), Seattle Supersonics (NBA), and San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) but other than that it just doesn't happen. Also why can't a franchise be related to the community? Are you telling me that every sport team I support in America has no community roots? My New York Yankees, my Nets, my Giants... they are not related and part of my community? What about in Australia with the Western Sydney Wanderers or Melbourne Victory... are they not part of the community? Look into them, they are.
The first part I can't fully argue but I just disagree on this whole "franchise vs. club" debate. They're all the fucking same in the end.
10 men come together and want to form a club they can form But if they want to open franchise, they have to take permission from brand owners (like isl/MLS whatever). They must pay to franchise owners follow their instructions and all.
So operating freedom wise clubs are best. But have more chance of failure. But franchise brand assures you some success/ profit guarantee
Amidst talk of a possible merger of the ISL and I-League in 2018, the Chennaiyin manager hinted that the merger could come to fruition as early as next year although he branded his claim as mere heresy. Thanking the ISL and Chennaiyin for his time in India as a manager, he stressed upon how unlikely keeping players in the country for seven months – the length of the rumoured new tournament – would be.
“Undoubtedly, it won’t be easy to call up the big names and marquee players because as far as I know – it has been rumoured – the league will start in November and end in April or May,” alleged Materazzi. “In this case, it won’t be easy for the big names to stay on hold for six or seven months and wait to start over again. I think it would be difficult to keep the enthusiasm high for that much time but, for me, the best solution has been to keep it like it is now – keeping it for three or four months. However, it’s not up to me,and I respect the decision. I think the ISL and all the people in-charge of it would do the best to develop football in India.”

Bottomline no difference. Even BFC is a franchise.
