  • Chirah is not a PSU but I get your point. @mizo commented on the older forum that he is surprised by their pathetic defense. All the 5 balls that entered the D was converted. But he is optimistic and taking heart from the fact that they lost 1st match in Rd I 3-0 ut qualified
sorry, actually I meant was they should form a corporate leagu for their own as in cricket

  • Either Aizawl FC, Royal Wahingdoh and United Sikkim FC for me.

ONGC: Dont care for football, would make 3 Mumbai clubs, have no fans, corporate club

Mohammedan: Good but already to many Kolkata clubs. Let EB and MB get 40,000 a game and make the SSL not look empty on TV and then let another Kolkata team in, also kick out Pailan and Prayag

Vasco: A 5th team in Goa would fail. The crowd they would get would be slow. Dont market there team.

Kalighat: Another Kolkata club. What is Kalighat anyway? If they are a section of Kolkata should they be restricted to the Bengal State League. Where would they play? Small teams in a national first division = Shit.

One information- MD Sporting has the largest supporter base in India. Yes, more than EB and MB . Fans of these two clubs are limited among Bengali community but that is not the case for Md Sporting. It has fans among non-Bengali Muslim community as well. In recent years the club has suffered due to mismanagement (they will suffer in future also) but if falls in good hand it can be very profitable club.

I think a revamp is needed and (you will most likely disagree with me on this) a change in the name of the club. I mean the team is named after there founders.

Also it is a profitable club and could bring in great crowds but so could foreign clubs like Leeds United or New York Cosmos or Sydney Olympic FC if they played in there respective top leagues but drawing big crowds does not automatically mean you should be in the top league. Look at the Cosmos and how they had a big attendance, eventually the club failed and that impacted the league.

The reason I like the NE clubs (United Sikkim FC, Royal Wahingdoh FC, and Shillong Lajong FC) is not only because they bring in great crowds. That is one of them. They also are stable clubs with great owners. They represent there area and town, and they play in a market so big that it could continue to grow. Kolkata is a market which (to me) has almost reached its potential. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal really should look to expand on there market and not let a third big club come in yet or maybe ever. How many cities do you know have 3 top tier sides let alone 4 or 5 or 6. London does not count, they already love domestic football and the place is more of a county than city.
  • You do realize a big reason behind Mohammedan SC's popularity IS their name. Don't you? In terms of trophies they are miles behind EB, MB or even Dempo if you take a critical look, still they have so many supporters. At the risk of sounding narrow minded, MSC used to be one of the signs of muslim eliticism in India (Nayeemuddin said that once) and their name is one of the reasons behind it. Same as East Bengal. You cannot replace these names with petty commercial names. Its like asking Arsenal or Juventus to be renamed after their cities.

True that. That is why I have accepted the names East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan AC. Even the name Royal Wahingdoh FC is fine.

Mohammedan to me (I dont know about you) a more religious based name than an actual club name. Arsenal is named after a historical armory and Juventus is a name chosen randomly by school children.

Anyway I would not mind them in I-League. I would like to see a lot more professionalism from them though off the field.

Also the reason, again, why I dont want them in I-League this season is because Kolkata is full of I-League clubs and a Sikkim team and Shillong team are needed in those markets.

@ Arsenalfan ...things in world doesnt always go by logic. Strength of MD Sporting is their name. Though they have no success after 80s still they have huge fan base in Muslim communities. And there is nothing wrong in it. Even East Bengal's fan base is more in people who (or their ancestors) are from East Bengal. You are aware of "Ghati-Bangal" thing here.

The name of Md Sporting can be a hindrance to get good sponsor but they can overcome it by asking Muslim industrials, businessman, film stars etc to come in their support. Even they can use their huge fan base to contribute through selling of merchandise etc.
But, first thing is needed to have a good management. For years the club is being run by thugs. One of their ex-President is serving life terms in a murder case. The current one is also a corrupt politician. SO chances of recovering their past glory is slim.

I hope you also read that I would not mind MSC in I-League, just not this season right.

Anyway I will get used to the name eventually, just seems silly to me probably because I am looking at India in the same way as American and Australia and not Europe (mainly because Australia and America and India are the same size in land and our football in these countries were the same at one point.)

Also how would you think a fifth club would do in Kolkata anyway? I think its better for Prayag United to move to Siliguri, have Pailan move somewhere else and have Mohammedan stay in I-League 2nd Division and just let East Bengal and Mohun Bagan take advantage of the West Bengal market (minus North Bengal). In the longterm it will help.

Kolkata is a big city to have fan base for many clubs. Fan base for three giants in Kolkata-
MB- Generally original people of WB who are called "Ghati"
EB-Genrally people from East Bengal who came during partition or in 197 war + me :D
    MdS- Genrally Muslims
These three sections will never change camp.

But , there are many people who have become detatched from football due to prominance of cricket. If any club works hard they can tap this section because they are no more loyal to EB or MB. I can see possibility of a club especially for Saltlake and New Town in future. 'Saltlake City' sounds well. Prayag should move to N-B to grow. It will be profitable for them.

There is no problem if 10 clubs come up from Bengal. I-League will become more competitive. 2nd division or perhaps 3rd division will become important. At the same time AIFF should talk with State Governments to support the clubs in their respective states especially - J&K, Punjab, Kerala, UP and North East states.
