Deal with KCA could see Chirag Kerala return to Kochi
After all the confusion and running around, Chirag Kerala is likely to come back to Kochi, its original home, after all.
“We had discussions with the Kerala cricket officials regarding the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and they have agreed to give it to us for the I-League matches,” said P. Bhaskaran, the Managing Director of Chirag Kerala, on Wednesday. “But we will have to play two of our four home matches in November somewhere else…probably in Thiruvananthapuram or Bangalore.”
T.C. Mathew, the Kerala Cricket Association Secretary, also confirmed the development.
“Yes, we had discussions and I have told them that we have our Ranji matches here (Kochi's Nehru Stadium) in November and early December but we will give ground for football after December 9,” said Mr. Mathew. “We just need about 10 days to work on the pitch to get it ready for football and we will be doing that work too.”
The return to home base should boost Chirag Kerala, which was Viva Kerala earlier, in a big way and also raise its stock in the football and corporate world.
Clash with IPL
But with the I-League likely to begin in the last week of October and set to run till May, there could be a clash with the Kochi Tuskers' home games in cricket's Indian Premier League which begins on April 8.
“Oh, is that so,” said Mr. Mathew, clearly surprised that the national football league could run so long. “In that case, we will need the stadium some 15 days before the IPL to get it ready.”
Mathew was also positive about the Tuskers' chances of staying in Kochi, despite the team management's request to the BCCI to shift the matches to other venues.
“The BCCI President and Secretary have indicated that the Tuskers will stay in Kochi,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chirag Kerala is yet to confirm its coach. “We will confirm everything next week,” said Mr. Bhaskaran.

i have mixed reaction to this. At one side i am sad that when the team is now backed by huge sponsorship, they would have brought many top class players to kannur and we the local people would have expected a top 5 finish in next I league and also witness great football matches provided they are held under floodlights rather than sunlit afternoon. Also i am happy that they will be playing in a huge stadium and help them earn more and more fans...and if somehow KTK don't want to play in kochi as per wish of the owners...we could get deserving football stadium which is perfect to hold international matches..but it would be hard on KCA who have invested around 5 cr for renovation.
will the field be suitable for a top division match and afc criteria?
Stadium will be best in I-League,but still pitch needs to be prepared well.
i think yes bcoz of its large capacity, permanent seating in lower tier, ground is better than kannur, kozhikode with proper drainage system done by a Malaysian firm last year.
this year after bcci inspection for security for KTK home matches, they were dissatisfied with fire safety mechanism and told the owners & KCA to hold matches on their own risk. So there isn't any problem for holding I league matches
now we have three clubs of last seasons, changing their names from last season coz of their new sponsors......this is what we call true professionalism from indian clubs......i just wont be surprised if in next season some sponsors buy mumbai fc and change their name to represent their company,as that is the only club which is struggling despite being having city name............
