I League prize money has been increased from Rs 50 Lakhs (!) to Rs 64 Lakhs, as per Bengali daily Ananda Bazar. Even though it is nearly equivalent to the proverbial peanuts, any increment in that sector is welcome.

    I read this in the hard copy, but could not find it in the online edition as you said. In any case, this was in Bengali, so unintelligible to most of the readers. But here is a link on the same story from The Telegraph: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.telegraphindia.com/1110920/jsp/sports/story_14529337.jsp"; onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.telegraphindia.com/1110920/j ... 529337.jsp</a><!-- m -->" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

    Hope this will help.

I-League winners are likely to get richer
    OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi: The fifth edition of the I-League, which begins on October 22, could see a substantial increase in prize money, All India Football Federation (AIFF) sources said.

“The total prize money till last season was Rs 1.10 crore. A proposal will be put forth at the executive committee meeting on Thursday to increase it by another Rs 40 lakh,” an AIFF official revealed.

As per the new proposal, the winners, who received Rs 50 lakh last season, will now take home around Rs 65 to 68 lakh. The runners-up should also be richer. They may receive Rs 35 lakh instead of Rs 28 lakh in the previous season.

While the schedule of the upcoming tournament is yet to be released, it is believed that last

year’s runners-up East Bengal will take on Churchill Brothers in the opening match in Calcutta. While the first East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan is likely to be held on November 20, the second-leg tie is tentatively fixed for February 4, 2012. The schedule will be released later this week.

Changes will also be made in the format for the Second Division though the initial plan to play it on home-and-away basis has been shelved because of financial constraints. The final rounds of the Second Division league will now be played on a double-leg basis in two different venues.

The AIFF has also planned three international friendlies for the national team in November. While two matches will be against Malaysia, the third will be against Zambia. One match against Malaysia likely to held in Calcutta.

Prize money barley covers the cost of most teams Top players
Secondly AIFF take over 6 months to pay that cheque to the teams , just ask Dempo

    1st round games :
    October 22nd
East Bengal vs Churchill Brothers @ Kolkata
Pune FC vs Shillong Lajong @ Pune
HAL vs Chirag Kerela @ Bangalore
    23rd October
Pailan Arrows vs Mohun Bagan @ Kolkata
Air India vs Mumbai Fc @ Pune
    Salgaocar vs. dempo @ Goa
Sporting Club de Goa vs Prayag United SC@ Goa

The change in the 2nd Division format has meant that teams will now delay their signing of foreign players til just before the 2nd leg.
Suits all the agents of players & the foreign players who are playing in the Kolkata league. Chance to get 2 pay cheques this year. 1 for CFL & 1 for I-League 2 <!-- s:clap: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/eusa/clap.gif" alt="" title="Clap" /><!-- s:clap: -->

Not sure about the 3 games in November though as their are 5 rounds of I- League games scheduled in that month.
There are 3 mid week FIFA dates ( World cup qualifiers & Olympic qualifiers ) in November , so I suspect AIFF will postpone a few games , especially the ones concerning the Arrows.

One of the venues for the 2nd Division final round will be Sikkim

The November qualifiers shouldn't matter to us. We were eliminated from both qualifiers in June and July. The 3 FIFA dates will be the days we play Malaysia and Zambia. They probably won't schedule a camp for it, so the players will need to be released just a couple of days before each game.
  • I wanted to comment and if possible, have a discussion on the drama involved with the East Bengal Prayag United game yesterday. This kind of drama around the big games in Kolkata is what sets the football scene in the city apart from elsewhere in the country. Goa can claim to have better youth development programmes but Goanese football is way too bland and does not test a player's character at all. Calcutta has always been the humbler of many a big star since time immemorial and will always be. Any slip up in the mental aspect of the game and you will be exposed in Calcutta which is not the case in Goa where players can play with a much free mind. North East is coming up but the grounds there are horrible, absolutely rocky and minefield for good football.

Coming back to yesterday's incident surround Gurpreet Sandhu, the tall lanky Chandigarh lad who decided to go all the way to the rival penalty in anticipation of finishing off a corner using height to his advantage. Confusion prevails as to whether this was done with coach Morgan's permission. During the press conference, Morgan admitted that he allowed Gurpreet to do what he did but added that he kept on screaming at the other players to take up defensive positions, which off course, no body did. COACH MORGAN HAS EXPRESSED EXTREME DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE IRRESPONSIBILITY AND LACK OF COMMITMENT OF some of his players. I write this since this has been a very widely discussed topic in the city football scene over the last five to six years. Most ex-players have pointed this out time and again in reference to some of the jugaadu dhanda paani outstation iNDIAN (not foreign) players. These players have a somewhat to extremely bohemian lifestyle, very injury prone (never work on their physical fitness except what is done in the usual practice session), have HEROGIRI ingrained in them, always take it easy even when their colleagues are going full throttle. My close observation would agree with this. Players LIKE ANWAR ALI, ROBIN SINGH, ALVITO D'CUNHA top my list, just naming a few. I hasten to add I have nothing against any community and if so, I would have clubbed the foreign players in the same bracket. Many a Nigerian player can play rough and give away unnecessary free kicks but I cannot question his commitment. For e.g. Daniel Zeleny a recent Australian recruit for Mohun Bagan is nothing great a player but I cannot question his commitment, he does whatever he can with his limited ability, now it's up to the coach to judge his ability and assign him tasks he can handle. ANWAR ALI and ROBIN SINGH have been consistently doing very funny things of late which belies any sense, no wonder I question their commitment. I can come up with case by case examples if required. One or two mistakes can always happen of a human but consistently match after match, the same mistakes are being repeated. I will analyse Anwar Ali in a following post to exemplify my point. I will leave Robin Singh since he is getting worse by the day ( I don't see much hope in him making it big, at max a one two match per year wonder) Alvito is passe, so my time is not worthy enough of even discussing him.

Next I wanted to discuss about foreign coaches in the I league. I see nothing exceptional in them and I don't see why some of the Indian coaches won't achieve equivalent or better results if allowed say to recruit players of their choice. Remember in the Kolkata giants, the coaches DO NOT HAVE ANY SAY in player recruitment and that to me has been the bane of these two clubs, more so MMB this season.
