Its funny how quickly the mass opinion can change! Sukhi is held as one of the best coaches in India, not for nothing. He is a great admirer of talent. And that is why he had so much achievements with JCT. He selected young players from the JCT academy wisely to make a formidable team which played in the top league for more than a decade with glory. Remember JCT always had a top table finish with a win until last season.

He was the one who led the U21 India team to SAFF Championship victory. But unfortunately for him, he is an Indian and not a foreigner.
Pailan Arrows is a bunch of shitty players we all know. That is the reason I have ZERO feeling for them! there's a saying in Bengali which roughly translates to
'You can thrash a horse to make it a donkey . But you can never thrash a donkey to make it a horse'

That is the reason of his frustration as clearly mentioned. He is a great coach and will make a huge comeback soon.

    Precisely.

To quote PK Banerjee - You cannot cook biryani with masala of a bland dish.

Sukhi didn't have the most talented bunch of youngsters in his hand. Did he? It was down to his organizational and discipline training that Arrows managed to earn so many draws when they could have lost. I feel bad for him at times. Things were out of his hand in JCT last season when they lost so many good players...again this season he got a team which was not his own choosing.

Sukhi is not the most attacking coach and his teams dont play eye-catching football. But he is someone who drills the fundamentals of football into his players perfectly. The PA project is looking very pointless to me right now.

I can't agree that Arrows don't have good players at their disposal. Why, for example players, who have done well for u19 team are not getting chance? Why not try players like Holicharan Narzary instead of continuing Sabeeth and Ajay Singh. I don't know how much Sukhi is to blame, but I dont buy the fact that all 30-36 players (too many) are shit.....if players like Milan, Lalzorama, Deepak devrani cud do decently last yr, why they cant manage it now? What's the point of Arrows if the Colin Toal handpicked u19 doesn't get opportunities?
The suggestions that the success (though limited) enjoyed by Bulpin is solely because the 'high' quality of players he had.

Apart from this, what I also found by chatting with a couple of players from Arrows, that there are large dissatisfaction within the team because of team selction and favouritism. This would happen when u have such a large squad.

Fela who used to come regularly as sub last yr hardly makes appearances. Deepak Devrani, regular last yr doesn't make too many appearances.

Botttomline is the team may not be good as last season but good enough to compete with the bottom teams in I League. But the team selection and too much of defensive cum clearance football strategy has not helped them.

True. Its almost like what will happen if Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger leaves after this season (hopefully not) people who said he was a shit manager that season will start to remember his achievements and players he made.

Same with Sukki. I hope he finds his feet. He may be part of the old way of Indian Football but sometimes that can be good.
  • I don’t mind Sukhi’s exit from Arrows. They need a foreign coach who is much more conversant in modern football.

In fact, I don’t like to see Arrows in the I-league in the first place. Instead of playing mediocre Indian teams ON lousy Indian turfs, they – and 2/3 more teams like them -- should continually play against European and higher placed Asian teams. And those team roasters should be filled up from the (mostly non-existent) academies of the I-league teams, until the AIFF academies come up.

Playing in the I-league, they are not developing themselves as desired and are diluting the professionalism of the league as well. But, AIFF prefers short cuts.

Oh, and we should not disturb Toal from what he is doing. He should be in the academies.

Thats why I said from now till the end of this season. The I-League ends in April which is when the First Academy starts. Plus he has people who help him out. Also if he did join Arrows for these last 2 months then we might actually see some young players playing instead of the 22-23 year old JCT players.
  • I feel that Sukhi is among the top Indian coaches. His capability to recognize talent is fabulous. The same demonstrated during his stay in JCT and as well as with India U-23 team. Though his tactics are somewhat questionable (mostly defensive and long ball, not nice to eyes), but is very effective against strong teams.

But, given the current condition of Arrows, I think it is better for him to stand down. The current situation of Arrows is due to many evident reasons.

Firstly, the quality of the current rooster is below par. I seriously doubt if there would be more than 2-3 players those who could make way in senior Indian team. Most of them are not even ready to play in I-league2, leave top division. There is a evident lack of creativity in center midfield as well on the flanks. In comparison to last year's arrows, there was fierce competition for four places in midfield among ralte, raja, shilton, jibon and others. But now, there is no good players in this region and as result Arrows are mostly stuck in their half. Coming to case of Sabeeth, I feel he is good(not extra ordinary). He is more effective as a poacher where he could just run past the defender to score unlike Jeje who can shield the ball from defenders. But again the lack of talented midfield he is forced to play deep which unfortunately is not his forte.

Secondly, clear favoritism of some players with respect to others. Most of the fielded player are around the age of 22 years. Though there are fela, fanai, devrani, etc. but since the age around 19, they are considered as immature compared to others of 22 years of age. I still dont know why Shilton D'Silva is not played regularly for arrows. He is clearly the best of the lot as of now. (I heard that he was injured after federation cup, but since heard of him at all).

Thirdly, the tactics of arrows has been poor. During Bulpin's time, there was hunger in the approach of players to succeed and had that winning mentality. Even though his tactics were based on long ball, but were good as he had equal (or slightly more) importance to defense and attack. The same was evident in their last match during last year's I league against MB. (5-4) They were not scared to play mighty MB and thus were able to score 5 goals in the process. But the same is lacking in current season. They are more focus on reducing the goal conceded count than previous years.

Fourthly, to some extent even moving of arrows from Delhi to Kolkata has to be blamed. Arrows were made to play in hot and humid climate of Kolkata compare to cold climate of Delhi. Thus quality of play has reduced significantly compare to last year.

The last nail in coffin is protection of Arrows from relegation. After the protection, arrows are more complacent this year, this is reflected in their play where they showed concrete lack of interest in winning. Players are happy to get over the games after loosing or drawing.

Now coming to Sukhi's stepping down, he has taken the right decision by saving his image, even Jose Mouhrino cant do anything with this bunch of donkeys. Though Toal is capable of coaching Arrow, he should not handed the reins of the under par Arrows. His is core responsibility is Youth development. He should be more focus on spotting talent for regional academies rather than dividing his attention towards Arrows. Moreover he might have to travel a lot with respect to spotting talent in youth football fest, I wonder how much he would be helpful anyway. It would be better to get any other coach solely for this purpose rather than getting someone who has to juggle between two or more responsibility.

favoritism has been one of those reasons why arrows failed to get results and also the style of sukhi which might not be the best suited for the boys he selected and further bad is the fact that arrows deservingly survived the last season but this time the performance of team could seriously raise the question of its ability to be among the elites of indian football

<!-- s:bow-plusone: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bow/plusone.gif" alt=":bow-plusone:" title="PlusOne" /><!-- s:bow-plusone: --> excellent analysis and mainly the fourth reason of climate could easily have helped arrows to perform better and ya toal is good in youth development and for coaching job, is bimal ghosh ,former coach of air india, still into coaching??if yes then he also should be considered given his talent to get best among youths and get the results
  • I actually now personally think that AIFF should do the drastic and stop all of Pailans matches. Just give all the teams they would play 3 points. No point in trying again. These players have failed. Just loan out the good ones (make them selected by Toal) and loan them to 2nd Division clubs. Then over the summer revamp the 2nd Division so that it is a straight 26 game season like I-League and place Pailan Arrows there. I-League is not for them.

Looks Arrows is not a factory to produce talents after talents, well nature will only give 6-8 good players in every set even though 30 might play for it.Like Protugal can never produce 2-3 Ronaldo's or Argentina have 2-3 Messi's at same time.

Last batch we had 6-8 talented players with potential who are playing for different clubs, now leftovers are rejects and some with no potential to improve further(I have mentioned those players in other topic). If the U-19 players are given chance this season they might be able to put up decent performance next season as they are still 16,17 or 18 only but still dont expect all of them to play like stars just 8-9 will be good.

Yeah but this season team is full of rejects with no potential to improve further,Also U-19 players aren't getting chance like the last batch did.

Believe me we have some good talent in Prabir Das,Passi and few U-19 players who are given very less playing time.
