Just some clarifications regarding Freddy mascarenhas. I personally asked him the reason regarding his sudden and early retirement from pro football; when he was down in Goa for vacations from Bermuda. And his answer was just one word; POLITICS. that was the reason he followed his cousin at Bermuda. Robinhood came down knocking and they still wanted him to play; but JOB + FITNeSS + Training is just difficult to get clicked all together; that's what he says. But he still plays for his village club named Cuncolim Union when he is down for vacations and also organises various friendly matches. Last year he had organised FREDDY 11 VS MICKY 11 at Cuncolim grounds when he was down for vacations and yea; the match was witnessed by legendary names involving Climax Lawrence Covan Lawrence Robert Fernandes ChandraKant He still has that passion for football imbribed in him.
Nice guy to speak Calm and always down to earth. But on field; he was fierce . was always hungry to win no matter its cricket or volleyball; during his childhood days
Another reason he cut short his footballing tenure was of injuries. He has already been operated on his knee twice; and since it was unsuccesfull; the doctor had already planned for a 3rd. If you guys remember; Freddy and Micky Fernandes had met with an accident while on their way home; from attending practice session.
@reddevil87, I appreciate your views on ISL and Indian football in general. My post was not against yours.
Certain opinions: A fringe I-league player wouldn't get a chance to play in lower divisions of Thailand, Malaysia, Tajikistan or Singapore, forget Aus, Japan, Korea, Iran, Uzbek, China. Plus there will be lots of barriers, foreign leagues are not open markets. He may get to play in lower leagues of Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri lanka but he won't get paid enough to support himself. So no point.
In such a scenario where the budding talent has to play abroad, are we not depending on them to develop him? Normally, the football structure in a country should be a broad-based pyramid, but in this case, an inverted one. Player supply will dry out and we will have 9 foreigners + 2 Indians in our entertainment league soon (not that anybody is going to notice, or that it would matter to the organisers).
"Player supply will dry out and we will have 9 foreigners + 2 Indians in our entertainment league soon (not that anybody is going to notice, or that it would matter to the organisers)."
See, this is the drivel that makes your whole post meaningless. What makes you think that?
To put it simply, Goa, Kolkata and the NE had 3-4 clubs each in the top flight, however low their quality were. So the local footballers thrived. Even mediocre players would hope for year-round engagement and income. Now they have one each. Even in those, there are 6 foreigners, meaning less spots for an Indian player. Even of the 5 playing Indian players, 3-4 were from outside the states (except NE), so even less chance of a local player to get play time.
This certainly will be a dampener for the sport at the grassroots level. Not much to look up to. If less young people are reluctant to take up football, the Indian player quality will decrease. So shore up quality, foreign composition is to be upped ... so it will go.
Nobody would complain or complain. At least not the one whose girlfriend inquired that if Shah Rookh is not there, who they can hope to spot; or the commentator who went "usne head kar diya, gaind hawa mein ..." (almost expecting a sixer, or a catch); or the fan who thinks his city would get to play Champions' League if they win the league.

And certainly not IMG-R.
