Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal is all set to play alongside Atletico de Kolkata in the newly introduced Indian Super Cup by the All India Football Federation starting from 2017-18 season. The AIFF after its meeting with the representatives of 29 clubs in the capital, is set to introduce a new tournament called Indian Super Cup. The new tournament will see top four teams from I League and top four teams of ISL playing together. The I League will now have three divisions viz., I League Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3. Under the new format the AIFF football calendar will be spanning for 6 months. The new calendar will begin in September and will go on till March. In this period the newly conceptualized Indian Super Cup, ISL and I League will go in tandem.
It was also decided that the ISL will have two more new teams. The two new teams will be from two different cities through a bidding process. The Indian Super League will have no relegation, whereas the I League will have a relegation system. The champions and runners of Super Cup will take part in AFC Cup.
The new rule will mean if Atletico de Kolkata qualifies from Indian Super League and both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan also qualifies from I League, the newly introduced Indian Super Cup will see 3 clubs playing from Kolkata.
A total of 28 teams are expected to participate in a reformed Federation Cup which will be christened as 'Super Cup' in 2018.
Of these 16, the top eight ISL teams are guaranteed to grace the tournament. They will be followed by four of the best teams participating in League One.
Then, with just four spots remaining in the tournament's initial lots, all the remaining teams – 10 from League two and 6 from League One - will contest play-offs with the eventual result being four of the best from the aforementioned 16 guaranteeing a place in the cup competition.
Note: With the number of ISL teams set to be increased, the bottom two or four (as per the number of teams who are integrated into the ISL from 2017 onward) could also be a part of the play-offs.
The Federation Cup will initially house four groups of four teams each. Each team will be grouped randomly. A home and away format, much like the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) continental competitions, will then be played within the group.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament. The last eight and final four teams will all play home and away formats to decide the finalists of the tournament.
These changes are expected to be implemented from the 2017/18 edition of the competition.
its simple... Nothing changes till after U17 World CUp then 2017-18 8 team ISL (+ 2 new expansion teams, perhaps) will play for 5 months on STAR network of channels At the same Time League 2 & league 3 will start League 2 is 2 zones ( north /South or East /West) on STAR Sports Indian football channel League 3 is 4 zone s ( north , south ,east , west) on LiveStream on web portal
After 5 months , we have a SUPER CUP ISL teams , + top 4 from 2 Division , and then the 2 who come thru from the 16 teams qualifier
2018 onwards same , But initial league will last 7 months then 2 Month SUPER CUP
what will happen if a league two club wins the Champions cup? This means we will see someone like Fateh hyderabad competing in AFC competitions. Pretty interesting moves.
What about the players? Will the same players be contracted and loaned across division, just like now? Or will it be more transparent like in other countries?
