Economics of I league

edited February 2012 in I league
To be able for all of puneities to shout "who are we PFC ,PFC" at balewadi for I league matches,it costs the Piramal's a whopping 5-7 crores annually.
Now what do they gain if they win I league 70 lakhs. now isn't that a classic case of imbalanced monetary inflow and outflow.

I remember Edmar Figuera alone was signed for 50 lakhs Rs..and that is just 20 lacs shy form the Total I league prize. Its ridiculous.

Not a surprise if JCT,Mahindra shut down their shops.. and looks like if MFC and CHirag get relegate they will also follow on the big two's footsteps.
AIFF needs to be sensible in deciding at least the I league prize money.. with all the AFC regulations coming in,the clubs will find their pockets burnt ,but in return are not getting a penny worth back..
I wonder how teams with abyssmal budget like Air india have managed to stay atop in I league.

I would have definably put on a nice price tag of at least 5 crores for the winner.,3 for the runners up, 1.5 for 3rd place and 1 crores for the 4th place.
Cm-on AIFF ravindra jadeja's value fetched in IPL can host the i leauge for 13 years to come .Isnt that a shame. don't tell me AIFF has no money aur sponsors..
You have all the heavy weights like Reliance,UB group,Jindal,TATA,Peninsula at your helm and ready to invest big in indian football.
Atleast the I leagus should be value for money currently if not profit making bussiness. This will ensure team sustain top flight football, otherwise sad to say only palian arrows,Air india,HAL likewise stupid teams will remian in the i League

  • I don't think any I-League team is close to that amount in revenue. Sure they have a big fan base and sell a few shirts but really its not that much.

    20 million euros = Rs.90,00,00,000 (Rs 90 Cr )

Just to put things in perspective ,from the list of top earning clubs, a few of the IPL teams are in the 400's Mumbai Indians are top in 350
There are some US College (american football teams ) in the top 300 and Newcastle United are 177 with over double the revenue of Mumbai Indians !!

The TV revenue that EPL & US teams receive is astronomical and hence there high rankings.

I-League clubs have no power to negotiate their own TV rights and have to rely on AIFF selling them off to regional Bengali channels which don't help the Southern, Western or NorthEastern clubs .
Average ticket pricing for I-League matches would be Rs 50 ,even if you doubled this to a 100 and sold out all home matches, given the state of most stadia, clubs could expect a revenue of 20Lakhs per game or 2.6 crores per season .

So with No TV money , therefore minimal sponsor money, even if you could get 20,000 fans per match & have them all buy your team Jersey ( IPL teams style ) , you still would be a long way short of reaching 90 Crores.

Indians lack sports culture and secondly I-league is utter garbage nowhere near to being Pro.

Clubs have to invest in few areas like Infrastructure where they can build small stadiums 5-10k capacity and then should get little professional by engaging in Merchandising which is a huge source of income.

Clubs donot have their own source of income it all depends upon the mood of owners

I League committee will implement a rule from 2012 onwards that the clubs have to spend 25-30% of their budget on youth and infrastructure

once such a rule is implemented we are bound to see improvement in infrastructure as well as a decrease in those insane salaries.. e.g. odafa(i am not against players being paid well). Eagerly waiting for the rule to be implemented. This will also make a club more accountable. is there any punishment for those who will not follow???
