  • I have watched every game Sunil and Jeje played in the last three years both together and also for their respective clubs in the I league. In fact, I have watched Sunil since the beginning of his career which was not at all that promising. He improved his game a bit at JCT. In fact if allowed to compare against erstwhile Indian strikers starting from the days of Chuni Goswami, Balaram, P K Banerjee, Subhash Bhowmick, Krishanu Dey to the likes of IM Vijayan, Bhaichung, Sunil and Jeje are just a pale shadow. I agree that Jeje needs to be given more time to mature but Sunil is just a paper tiger given the standard of strikers presently in the country caused by the national clubs strong preference of foreign strikers over Indian ones. I saw the game Kansas city played against Man United, he barely had the ball in that game, forget about doing anything. Having watched soccer in America from close, I knew Sunil would not succeed in the US the day I heard he was heading there. I am in full agreement with Rob Banh that Sunil barely has any chance of succeeding outside India given his average technique, poor frame and lack of burst in pace. He can concoct stories of his abroad stints and keep on fooling the Indian audience who barely has any other option to root for being the lone Indian striker right now. The abroad stint stories are the most recent stunts of some of the players the other two being Anwar Ali and Robin Singh, both of whom are technically pathetic and concoct these to jack up their price in the Indian market. The most recent game against Zambia is another case in point, just one defender was enough to keep Sunil at Bay in the second half, they just resorted to zonal marking and Sunil started mispassing under pressure. Sunil does not have enough success in the Indian club scene and constantly complains about poor facilities which are just excuses to cover up for his deficiencies. In the Indian club scene. he is nowhere near the likes of Odafa, chidi, tolgay, ranti martins and the like. He only has something to show with the national team where he competes with juniors like Jeje and leaden footed players like Sushil Singh (who does not even get a club in the I-league) and Abranches (who is not in the starting eleven with Dempo most of the time) or inconsistent injury prone players like Mohd Rafi.

I have been following Indian football for eons and not at all convinced with Sunil chetri's limited capabilities. I am in complete agreement with Rob Banh and Trevor Morgan on this and both of them have far superior credentials compared to Sunil.

I am sorry but I live in America and can tell you that Sunil would have easily succeeded over here. The MLS is a big fat joke. Even the I-League, if taken seriously, can pass it in like 5-10 years. Kansas City used him for marketing purposes only and that is it. Sunil in every reserve match he played for Kansas City scored hat-tricks. Everyday I would read a Kansas City Wizards Reserve Match-Report and see that Sunil scored 3-4 goals. I even watched him play Colorado in the US Open Cup and he played great. It was all a marketing ploy by Kansas City that did not pan out the way they wanted it. Sunil was better than American players but in order to bring up marketable Americans they needed to release Sunil because that is what MLS is. A business. They don't care about quality, its all money. Also you are really underrating Sunil. Sure most goals came against South Asian teams but when in the right team with the rich infrastructure he can kill teams off which is what Bob Houghton said and I take his word over Trevor Mogan's any day.
  • I am not underrating him, he is the best we have at present and he is the BEST INDIAN striker today after Baichung Bhutia but with his ability and technique, I see only limited success internationally, even middle tier Asian teams like Thailand, North Korea, Qatar, Jordan and the like. I am not talking of Iran, Japan, South Korea or Uzbekistan, I am pretty sure he has no chances against them. Well, time will tell, I will keep on updating a full analysis on his performance on all international matches for India and also for his present club in the I league once he gets back from his ankle injury around mid January.

nope according to Facebook he will be starting the Bayern Munich game in early January. Honestly I think that is a stupid decision from him or the AIFF. So what if it is Bayern Munich. Sunil played against Manchester United FC before.
  • That is outdated information. Initially his ankle injury was supposed to heal in a couple weeks but his club doctors and physio declared it a grade 2 tear of his ankle ligament. Not sure if you are aware, Indian clubs have better medical facilities than what the national federation can offer to the national players. The medical stuff associated with the national team comes up with all kinds of funny diagnosis all the time. AIFF is the worst in terms of infrastructure and only recently have they started working on bettering it, they don't have a proper sponsor, how will they ? That's another discussion which I don't want to branch out here. Alberto Colaco did absolutely nothing to improve infrastructure at the federation level in his more than one decade at the helm. The way his ankle injury is progressing, he has no chances of making it to the Bayern game, he will be doing rehab with the therapist then. His left ankle is fully plastered well up to calf and the plaster will be removed in another couple weeks from now. He has been coming to his club practice for the last couple days and parks himself on a chair outside the sidelines watching his fellow players practice for their upcoming I league matches. Then he will need another couple weeks at least, to get back to match fitness. I am updated on a daily basis through my various channels since I desperately want him to resume playing for his current club.

  • My hunch is he will take longer than projected to regain full match fitness. Medically healing is one thing and getting back into the his pre injury form is another. From my playing days, I know it really sucks after getting back from ankle injuries, you feel kinda gingery after running/shooting for some time and it's easy to strain the ankle once again, so it's very important that he is not rushed. Yesterday he celebrated with his club mates after practice. They had rossogollas and he was congratulated with bouquets etc.

  • A few more unknown players I would like to throw light on...........

    1. Lester Fernandes, current club Pune FC position midfield

He is a great prospect for the midfield, the guy is pretty accurate in his passing and can run, also he has a knack for finding the net at regular intervals. Cons: Too soft and poorly built for top international standards, does not have the silky skills to make up for the lack of built.

    2. Gurjinder Kumar, current club Pune FC position left back

There is a dearth of good left backs in India and he is a welcome prospect. He can be a great substitute to Nabi, in case Nabi is injured or fatigued.

    3. Denson Devdas, current club Prayag United position defensive midfielder

Again he can be a good replacement in the midfield if any of the midfielders in the starting eleven are injured or fatigued. His through passes pry open many a defence like a knife slicing butter. His long rangers bulge the net once in a while which is a bonus. India does not have too many accurate long range shooters. The only con I can think of is his softness and lack of aggression in snatching balls away from the opposition. Such soft approaches won't work internationally, therefore I would prefer someone hard and tough like Mehtab Hossain to make the starting eleven in this position.
  • 4. Gurwinder Singh, current club East Bengal position central defender

After Mahesh Gawli and Gourmangi Singh, he is our best bet for the central defender position. He is strong, reasonably technically correct by Indian standards, fair anticipation although he tends to loose his cool sometimes and gets rough with his pushing, shoving and tackling. He can be a good replacement to Mahesh or Gourmangi provided he cleans up his game a bit.

    5. Ravinder Singh current club East Bengal position left back/half

He has a golden left foot, fairly accurate by Indian standards, also he is a cool customer although he needs to improve his game sense quite a bit. A good standby in case Nabi is injured or fatigued.
